If you buy new, check into buying a 1 ton, there is little difference in price, and it leaves you with options if you decide to upgrade later. Registration is higher in some states, thats about the only downside. 3/4 ton probably ok with a smaller reflection, but Id run the numbers first using 20% of the rv’s GVWR as your pin wt., not the published pin wt., and make sure its well under. You dont want to be right on the edge.

Definitely look at a 1T. The "half-ton" towable 5er line really depends on the 1/2T and some of the 3/4T diesels will be close to payload with 10K loaded up. Also note this likely won't be your first fiver and as mentioned there is very little difference in price between a 3/4T and a 1T. My 5er is a 28BH and a 3/4T diesel is at or over payload when fully loaded for us. I thought I was smart in trading in the 3/4T for a 1T... but then we starting thinking about the next step into a Momentum in a couple of years. Now my F450 is due to be delivered within 2 weeks to pave that future path.

The new 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 LT has around 3300lb payload (11350 GVWR) with Diesel and 10 speed Allison transmission. Drives very nice. By far the highest payload for a 3/4 ton truck.

My first diesel was a Chevy 2003 3/4 tow.....It towed OK with our cougar, but when we went to the next level the GD 337 We needed a new truck. I ended up going with the 2017 Ford SRW F350 short bed Diesel ..What a great truck!!!! This truck tows great, is quiet inside, and very comfy.....I went with the F350 because the F250 was borderline for the weight. The F350 was the same price as the F250 and we ordered it the way we wanted it....It took about 6-8 weeks for delivery.

I can use it for a daily driver, but here the parking spots are so small I bought a "beater" car for the short grocery store and errand trips. We have about 21K on it right now in 2 years. Did I say how comfy it is?
