When I use mine it is no higher than about the height of the red LED display on the fireplace and no more than 3 - 4 feet away.

Just make sure the remote you are trying is for the fireplace NOT the wall thermostat. Several have mixed up the two, myself included. The remote for the fireplace is small and Black. The remote for the wall thermostat is grey or silver in color and slightly larger. Just this past fall, with not having used the fireplace all summer, we went looking for the remote, picked up the wrong one and spent two weeks trying to get it to work. Only then did I discover we had the wrong one. Found the correct remote hidden in the drawer under the TV and wonder of all wonders, the fireplace does work with the PROPER remote.

Try flipping the battery, our remote did not work either. Then I flipped the battery over and it's working just fine for the past year.

Have tried the remote up close, the battery can not be flipped it will not slide back in, and the remote is the one shipped to me from Grand Design for the fireplace. My wall thermostat does not have a remote.

Old, old posting. Our fireplace (and many others' fireplaces) didn't last 5 nights. Unfortunately, those going into RV's are of terrible quality, and failure is the norm.
I'm going to scrap plans to replace my electric fireplace, and just build shelves to go into the 23" wide hole.
