Which credit card for Canadian traveling in US

Planning our first trip to Florida this winter. As a Canadian, what type of US dollar credit card do you use? Do you use a US dollar credit card from a Canadian bank or from a US bank? Do you associate a US address with the card or a Canadian address? When paying for TV (Dish Network) and internet/phone (Verizon or AT&T) services, have you had any issues using only a Canadian address?

We use a VISA (USAA) for travel in both the US and Canada. USAA does not charge any exchange fee either way. When in Canada, it's in Canadian dollars; when in the US, it's in US dollars. Our address never changes.

    Hi Dave & Sue,

Your Canadian credit cards will work everywhere in the US. Just contact your card provider before you go to tell them that you will be in the US. Different banks have different fees for US purchases. Anywhere from zero to significant, so check your bank’s fees.

If you are buying gas and paying at the pump, the pump will ask for a Zip Code. (the US is way behind on PINs and tap payment) Enter the three numbers from you postal code followed by 00 . . . and this will usually work.

Some stores have tap capable machines . . . but their cards are not capable of tap. Tap your card and it usually works. Totally baffles the sales person .

A Canadian address is OK for internet/phone but you will probably need a US address for Dish TV. Before you buy Dish, check out free over-the-air TV. All major networks at HD resolution near any major city.
