New Truck - Ford or Dodge

Well I think its time to get a new truck we have lost all faith in our 2007 F550 after a year of breakdowns and $15,000 plus on EGR and heads!

So do we go for the all singing F450 that will do the job very well said the Ford salesman or look at the Dodge RAM 4500 I think they do one that size?

Our Momentum 385TH is always fully loaded so the truck works hard and we do 20,000 + each year.

Your views on this would be very much appreciated, I have driven the new Ford which was very nice and will go for a test on the Dodge soon.

Actually, I don't think you can go wrong with either truck. They both are quite capable of moving a lot of weight very effectively. For me, it boiled down to the interior and exterior details that Ginnie and I liked the most. That's why we settled on the Ford.

There are many more Ford dealerships when you're out on the road in case service is needed. And they're more established dealerships than many Dodge/Ram businesses.

And the Ford will sell quicker and easier on the used truck market down the line.

The 6.7 Ford built motor is simply a hoss.

Are you sure that you need the extra capability of a 450/4500. I'm thinking that either 350/3500 dually will be more than adequate to handle the 385TH. The one tons should also deliver a slightly better fuel mileage. Suggest you send a PM to @Big Mike on here...he just got a new Ram 3500 towing his 385TH and also had scale weights of the set-up.

So your choice is between a Made in Mexico truck by a company from Italy that is headquartered in The Netherlands - or a Ford. Thought decision.

RAM's 4500 is only available as a chassis cab.

The 3500 dualy would be more than adequate though...

I have a Ram 3500 DRW, 6.7 6 speed automatic. I pull a 16,000 fiver with no trouble. I liked the new Ford, but I couldn't see paying the extra. The Ford I looked at was built in Mexico.

    Hi Tony,

I atually upgraded from a 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 Regular Cab 2wd Dually (4.56 rear axle ratio) to a 2014 Ram 3500 Crew Cab 4wd Dually(3.73 rear axle ratio). Like night and day! While I have not had a chance to scale the new set up yet, I did scale the old one, I know the new Ram 3500 is heavier, an I am not concerned with that, I know with the 14k gvw on that i will be ok. My old weights with full water, a Harley Dresser and a Honda Shadow, and Loaded for a trip were as follows: Front Axle-4,220lbs; Rear Axle-7,640lbs; Trailer Axle-15,380lbs; Gross Weight-27,240lbs.

The new truck I can set the cruise control at 65mph and do that all day, up and down the hills, no issues at all. The only thing is that with the engineering for a better ride, you will get a bit of rear end squat, so I will probably be adding a set of air bags to the rear, only to correct the headlight alignment.

    I hope this helps.

    Big Mike.
