Warning- check behind your convection microwave for wall burns

This has been noted before but I finally got around to pulling the microwave based on other owners posts. 2017 377 March build with High pointe micro. We are weekenders and get out approx 6 weekends and 2 week long trips a yr. use the microwave regularly but convection function infrequently. I have meant to pull out the mico and check for thr reported charring that can occur on the wall. Got around to pulling our micro and was not at all shocked to see the same. Definitely a safety issue. Based upon response from Emily Stahley on FB it doesnt sound like GD has any concerns because there has not yet been a “combustion event”. This absolutely is a fire risk and should be a recall. Until one of us burns down our unit I doubt there will be.

My fix was to go to local Menards and purchase 6”x18” aluminum sheet. I cut in half- double stacked and screwed in the wall to act as a heat shield. Still not sure about using the convection function and def would not use if I was not present at the rig to keep an eye on it.

Thanks for the heads up. Makes me wonder if this has this happened with non induction High Points.

Frustrating that GD is not proactive in preventing a potential fire hazard.

I agree whole wholeheartedly. It's my understanding that the new builds are installing heat reflective tape on the cabinet inside behind the convection microwaves.

We have a 2018 Solitude and I called GD with my vin-#. No tape. I asked and they agreed to install the tape on my 2-year old unit as a warranty claim. I got the dealer to report and send pictures of the burn-state of the cabinet before the tape was installed. We had been using the convection feature a fair amount, but there was no evidence of burning. Still, I feel better (though not a lot better) with the tape in place.

I don't understand GD's position on this either. Baffles me. Fire in an RV is a terrifying thought.

Have you reported this to GD? What you are showing is a "combustion event" in fact it looks like several.

That should be reported to GD with the photos. That looks like there was a small fire starting off to the left, even a smoke trail showing.

Emilys comments are downplaying the whole thing , It reads to me like they don't want to send out a fix to owners who bought pre foil protection.
If we had a convection microwave this would make me leary of using the convection setting.

So.....Since the fire department hasn't been called and nobody has been injured or died this is a non issue. Fix it your own self. That's how I read Emily's response.

Where there's smoke...……..an obvious smoke trail is seen in your photo where the vinyl burned. No worries, there's a fire resistant layer of thin, dry luan beneath it.

I wonder what the effect of high temps have on the bond of the interior wall panel over time. I wonder what gasses are released in an enclosed space when vinyl burns?

IMHO, GD needs to step up and offer a fix for those vins affected. Not everybody is capable of the r&r of a convection oven.

Not only the bond but the hard insulation in the wall. It doesn't take a lot heat to deform or melt it. Then there is the off-gassing from the insulation as it melts.

Is this an issue with solitudes or any of the convection microwaves? Ryan you may want to switch that metal to stainless steel as it is less likely to conduct heat and maybe a little air gap if possible. I would also note that was the start of a fire it just did get going for what ever reason.

For clarification, is this issue related to the use of the convection oven feature or does use of the microwave feature also pose a fire threat?
