appreciate that. that's what etrailer recommended, as well. another product recommended was the equalizer. it has plates instead of chains. what advantage do you see in the chain vs plate design, or did you decide on reece for other reasons? thanks

I went with what I knew worked for me in the past. Been towing trailers for 14 years now and the 2 previous used the Reese as that was what the dealer was selling when we bought our first one. I have never had a sway issue, easy to hook up once setup properly and never any quality issues so in my mind why change with what has worked so well for me. I am sure other brands or designs may work equally well, I was just not willing to experiment and get something that might give me problems. Too much riding in the truck with me to take a chance.

Just recently purchased a 2018 297RSTS. pulling it with an 2015 F250 6.2 L V-8. I noticed when towing it stays in 5th gear unless i really get on a flat spot, this is at 60-65 mph. Sometimes going up even small hills it will downshift into 4th or rarely into 3rd gear. Havent had the chance to weight everything with the trailer attached but we dont really have much in it just a few dishes and jacks/hoses. Says max tongue weight is 1250 with a weight distributing hitch, GVWR from the sticker says 10000lb.
This is the gear ratio on the truck
First Gear Ratio (:1)3.97 3.97 min 3.97 max
Second Gear Ratio (:1)2.32 2.32 min 2.32 max
Third Gear Ratio (:1)1.52 1.52 min 1.52 max
Fourth Gear Ratio (:1)1.15 1.15 min 1.15 max
Fifth Gear Ratio (:1)0.86 0.86 min 0.86 max
Sixth Gear Ratio (:1)0.67 0.67 min 0.67 max
Reverse Ratio (:1)3.13 3.13 min 3.13 max
Just wondering if this is normal, I think with the 297RSTS we are at the very top end of the capacity for a non 5th wheel and maybe pushing it a bit on the truck?Last edited by Jamessfl; 10-27-2019 at 07:26 AM.

Found this article - sounds like what I am experiencing is par for the course with low torque on a gas engine vs a diesel. Seems like it is pretty common to run in 5th gear. https://www.mygrandrv.com/forum/show...ng-Performance

This is totally normal. I pulled our 297RSTS with a Toyota Tundra with the 5.7 L V-8 and had the same experience of towing in 5th gear unless going downhill or very flat road and no wind. Small hills would still hold 5th gear. Your 6.2 has 385 HP and 430 lb-ft of torque vs my Tundra that was 381 HP and 401 lb-ft of torque so very much the same numbers but your 250 is heavier so it makes sense that it would shift down to 4th on hills too.

We have had 297rsts for 3 years and have had no problems. Really like it, would hate to leave it, but looking seriously to move to 5th wheel. We have found it to be solid and the upgrades we have found on this great owners forum were easy to implement. We tow with a 2012 Chevy Silverado 2500HD LTZ using an Equalizer 1400# hitch. Best i could see on the Sherline scale was about 1200 ish tongue weight fully loaded for us, and get between 10.5 and 13.0 mpg depending on conditions and roads. Normally around 11.5 mpg by computer, understanding that it could be off by a little.
