    Heat management with heat pump

Tonight is the first night below freezing in our 2930RL. I plan to run the hp in the main area and the bed room has it's own thermostat. I assume I can use the gas furnace on that. Run the fire place and turn on the tank heaters. I am paying $.25 per KWh for electric, so trying for the best combination between electric and gas. The good news is, the coldest night forecast in the next couple weeks is 27, but we are here (Baltimore Washington area) until mid December. We'll try to maintain until then.

    Cheers!

Wrong! No option for heat in the bedroom! Wouldn’t it be nice if the heat pump and gas could work together!

One of the disadvantages of heat pump systems. OK in mild locations line 45F. Worthless past that as the outside will freeze up. Some units have back up electric heat strips which will run that electric bill though the roof as will ceramic heaters that are also a major fire hazard. I run gas heat and run the water heater on gas, fridge on auto. I find most of the time the price of the propane is less than the highly inflated prices of campground electric.

When the temps are below freezing, you need to make sure the main furnace cycles to keep the basement (and your water utilities) heated, too. If the furnace thermostat is set too low and you're running electric heaters inside, the basement isn't getting heated.

They do work together. If set for HP the furnace will kick in if HP cant maintain set temperature. If temp drops by 5 derees below the tstat set point the furnace will kick in. The HP will not work well below 40-45 degrees so is not worth running when it gets cold out. It will just waste electric below 45ish.

Here are some numbers for you

A gallon of propane will provide approx. 91,500 BTUs and an average price for propane is approx. $2.40 to maybe $2.60 depending on where you get the tanks filled.

A Kw. Of electric will provide 3,412 BTUs...and your campground price is 25˘ per Kw.

Divide the 91,500 by the 3412 and you get...almost 27.

Multiply the cost of the electric...25˘ times the 27 to get the cost of equal amounts of BTUs

The number comes out to $6.75 for the electric and approx. $2.50 for the propane.

And, as stated above, using mostly electric instead of the gas furnace may cause cold/freezing issues in the basement where the water line stuff is at.
