How Useful Are Side View Cameras?

I have been researching backup/observation camera systems for awhile and have decided on a system from Haloview. I haven't decided whether or not to get the side view cameras. I have no intention of using them while going down the road but thought they maybe useful at times when backing up especially when turning when I lose sight of one side of the camper in the mirrors. My wife is usually my spotter but she is still learning. Haloview has recently introduced their side marker light cameras so installation should be easy and they are not terribly expensive.

Haloview has also just introduced a camera kit that integrates the rear view camera into the Furrion shark fin mount and not just a bracket to replace the mount and use the same screw holes. Plug and play unless I have to wire into the marker light for the power I want without being always on. This new kit is available with or without the side marker light cameras. Information here: https://www.haloview.com/haloview-mc...ra-system.html

Any comments or advice on the cameras from Haloview and especially the usefulness of side view cameras. Thanks!

I find rear cameras WAY more useful on the road than when backing. Side view is nice for changing lanes in traffic and judging when you clear things like gas pumps, but a rear view alone does pretty well.

I’m not impressed with Haloview quality. Mine is toast after 18 months. Antennas kept falling apart until I completely tore them down and rebuilt them. They crimped and soldered the braid on the internal cable and neither connection held. Finally, the monitor stopped receiving on one channel (7101) and the signal drops out if I put my right arm on the steering wheel.

I added the side view cameras primarily because our driveway is narrow, curved and lined with HARD obstacles (boulders), and the combination must be backed in. My spotter can't be everywhere at once and the cameras allow me to chase the 5er in and up the driveway more smoothly as the wife keeps eye on tail swing.

They are also great for lane changes because, for whatever reason, I have drivers that love to camp in the lane alongside versus actually using it to pass.

I have the Furrion side cameras. I found they don't look down the side of the trailer, in other words I can't see the rear corner of the trailer. This could be related to the skirt they are mounted on, don't know. While you can see what's along side, not seeing any of the trailer gives you no reference.

A also find cameras minimally useful when backing. My wife is a great spotter. We use two-way radios and she tells me exactly what I need to do. The camera is handy when pulling back over after passing a semi on a grade, but the good combo mirrors on my truck do a good job of that, too. I guess it's all in what you get used to and your experience and comfort levels.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I will probably order the kit with them included since they are not that expensive or difficult to install. I may get minimal usage out of them but they may be helpful when backing into my driveway which is a challenge due to a narrow subdivision road and then a 90 degree turn off of my driveway onto my RV pad. Unlike the Furrion's, the Haloview side view cameras are adjustable so I should be able to see the sides of the trailer for reference. I have good mirrors on my F350 so I just don't see the need when going down the road but maybe they will help at times.

I could not put our 2450rl in our storage compound without a backup camera. I have a utility trailer in my spot that I have to back up to. I was putting my wheel chocks down so I would stop a foot away from the utility trailer but the camera worked way better. I can't put our trailer in our driveway it's too short if I stop with the trailer rear bumper lined up with the driveway I can drop the steps into the driveway so we can load the trailer. The rear camera also shows the spare tire hand to see any movement when going down the road. I do wish I had ordered the side camera's.

YouTube channel Big Truck Big RV has done a couple of episodes with HaloView products. I've only watched the install one, so I don't know if JD has made follow ups on performance.

I found a camera system on Amazon.com however I personally have not purchased it yet. The reviews seem to be pretty good and the price is almost to good to be true for a 4 camera system but I will be willing to give a try. It's the Leihuzhekiji Car Backup Camera and Monitor Kit. If anyone has used it I would love to hear what they think.
