    F-350 gas version for towing

    I think I found a well priced 2019 F-350 XL 3.73 gearing, super crew at $42K . New, never driven. My question is should I go with gas or diesel? The truck I'm looking at is gas. This is something I'd prefer because of lower maintenance costs, easier to maintain, better fuel choices where I'm at (very few diesel stations in this area). Still towing 2400BH.

    @luke79,

    That will work very well for you with that trailer. No need for diesel unless you want it.

    With gas you also get a higher payload capacity when compared to the same equipped diesel version. There is no right answer, pick what works best for you. I dont think towing with gas is an issue. I always recommend diesel if doing much mountain towing, that's where it is very noticeable, especially for the exhaust brake.

    That truck; with a good hitch setup properly, would work great. I towed a similar size trailer with a F250 6.2 and I couldn`t asked for any better.

    Sounds like gas is the right choice for you. I wouldn't hesitate if it's a good deal and the truck fits your needs.

    We live in the midwest, but we typically go west through the Rockies. I did tow that trailer with an F150 5.0 through the Rockies and Sierras and it actually did ok.

    Question about today's powerstroke? I know older models used to have issues and some owners have decided to bullet proof it. Is this still an issue on today's trucks? Has Ford finally figured it out and the engine is pretty much trouble free?

    Bullet proofing was from the old 6.0 version from International. Ford did away with those a long time ago. They now have a 6.7 litre that they make themselves and it has been a very good engine. When they designed it they left a lot of capability's for making it even better.

    I've towed my 20k lb Momentum up and down mountains up to 5000 ft elevation and it has been great. If you look at the powerstroke.org forum you can see where the problems were, generally the early 6.7s had some turbo issues, but other than that it's pretty good. There are numerous people on that forum who have 6.7s with over 200k miles. I'd say it's pretty reliable.

    I tow my Reflection 285BHTS with a 350 XLT CCSB 6.2 gas with 3.73s. At 9,500 pounds, it tows it without a problem. My first Super Duty (F250) was a 6.2 gasser. When that met an untimely end, I had no problem at looking at another one. I just stepped up to a 350 for more payload capacity. At least my generation of SD, the 6.2/ 6R140 combo is a pretty stout option IMHO. About the only thing I wished I had was 4.30s instead but that would be a unicorn truck in the used market when I was looking 2 years ago.
