Putting a USB on 120V is silly. If you have shore power your converter can handle the load.

Not that some designers aren't silly.

USB ports are 12V DC by definition. The specification for USB has a 12V power supply (2 wires) and two optional pins/wires for a data connection. In the case of your RV, the data pins/wires are disconnected because your RV has no computer to connect to. For an RV, the USB ports are purely for charging that that is 12V. The power source may either be your converter or your battery.

Correction. My bad. The power wires are actually 5V in a USB connection. There must be a step down somewhere from 12V to 5V. The rest of the above is correct, however. A description can be found at https://www.leadsdirect.co.uk/techni...ms/usb-wiring/

Sorry, USB is actually 5 volts DC.

I contend it is far easier to get that 5VDC from 12VDC than to get it from 120VAC.

They are, in fact, run off the 12V system, at least on my 351M they are. And your right, it's a more simple operation to step 12V DC to 5V DC than 110AC to 5DC (although, with modern tech, neither is "hard"). Anyway, that's very nice for me, I have some cameras in the rig that I want powered at all times, and the USB ports are a great place to pick that power up for me!

Easy way to see if your USB is powered off of battery is disconnect the shore power and no generator - plug your camera in to see it works. For your IP camera, you still would need a USB powered MiFi or Jet Pack hot spot for your reliable data connection. If your USBs do by chance are powered by the 120v system only, you could use one of the portable power station, it should run a camera for several days.

Here's a link to the power station.
