$30+ to fill DEF? How else can we fill it?
So I'm new to diesel ownership, and realize this is probably a newb post. I bought and used a bottle of DEF when I got low. Came in a box and picked it up at an auto parts store when I was getting oil for my daughter. It was about $17 after taxes. It didn't fill the tank. That would have taken more than one. Worse, it dripped and I got some on my shirt.
They sell it at truckstop pumps. Does anyone fill theirs at a Pilot or Loves? If so I'd be curious what you pay a gallon roughly or on a best guess average, and how filling on that side of a truckstop works. Will their DEF pumps fit the Ram filler tube? What's the best cheap source you've found?2018 Grand Design Reflection 337RLS

I've used truck stops many times, ranges from $2.50 - 2.90 /gal depending where. Eitherway, much cheaper than buying a jug from a store. No clue on the Ram since I have a Ford, but the nozzle fits perfectly in the Ford filler tube, I'd imagine they are a standard size.

Never pay more than $12-13 for the name brand DEF. If you buy from an auto parts store, every major chain runs sales at this price. Home Depot nearly always has it for $12.99. The big box stores, in my case BJ's Wholesale, it's always $12. I personally stick with that brand (Peak), and definitely get it at the truck stop pump (also Peak) because it'll always be fresh with their turnover and it's cheaper by the gallon that way (even cheaper if you're part of a fuel program). Finally, I belong to several automotive enthusiast forums, and folks swear by Walmart brand DEF, but I have no personal experience. The one thing frequently mentioned is to make sure the Walmart DEF has an intact seal because apparently some special folks like to refill with water and return them.

Yes, I always fill at truck stops with my RAM. I get about 4,000 miles not towing and about 2,000 miles towing.

Been using Walmart brand Super Tech DEF 2-1/2 gallon jugs exclusively. Currently it’s about $7.88/jug. It comes with a long flexible plastic corrugated hose that allows easy filling in my Ford Diesels.
Before going to cash register I unscrew the cap and confirm the seal is intact.
Whenever the truck’s DEF gauge reads 1/2 full I add a jug. I believe my Ford def capacity is 7.5 gallons.Last edited by Jerryr; 01-09-2020 at 11:13 PM.

We always get DEF at truck stops. Usually around $2.75 to $2.79 around here.

I fill up at truck stops and the nozzle does fit the RAM DEF filler. Pricing is around what other have stated.

Truck stop DEF here. Nozzle is standardized as are the filler necks in the trucks. Be careful when using truck stop DEF pumps, it will stop on its own but will spill out. Just go slow and it will be a clean fill.

For the RAM, when your gauge needle is in the red, two of the 2.5 gallons boxes fills the tank nicely. I usually try to fill up at a truck stop that has the pump DEF also, but always travel with a box of DEF just in case I've forgotten to fill up somewhere or the pumps are down. Various reason for having it with you, it is cheap insurance for not be stranded.

I've done both.. A box from Walmart and fill up at the truck lanes pump. Probably cheaper at the pump.
I just did a round trip from Georgia to Texas. 900 miles each way, plus driving around town there and back home. I've used just over a half tank of DEF in probably 2200 miles, 1800 of it towing.
