    Propane alarm

We are on our 2nd trip and our propane alarm is going off continually. We’ve turned everything off and undone the power to make the alarm stop. The minute we turn the power back on the alarm goes off. Any ideas?

Are you sure you don’t have a propane leak? All propane tanks turned off at the tank? Anything that emits fumes like air freshener or a gassy dog? ANY cleaning agents or sprays of any kind used near the detector? Any propane appliances or any kind of non-electric heat source inside the camper?

Thanks for the reply. Nothing with fragrance. Propane tanks are off. The beeping started the minute we plugged in power to our truck to connect the ball. Would the fumes from the truck have set it off? If so, will it stop after some time. We’ve had the trailer opened up since we parked at the RV park. We disconnected the wires so that we could turn on power and the beeping would stop. We will try to find someone to help us tomorrow.

It could be low voltage. What is the condition of the batteries?

I had a battery fail, overheating and emitting sulphur smell which set off the propane detector. Removed and replaced battery and took care of that. How old is the RV and propane detector? They do have a life expectancy of 10 years or less.

You either don’t have a good, charged battery in the trailer, or something is wrong with the truck that is dropping the trailer voltage when connecting.

Was the trailer connected to shore power while parked between trips?

It could also be a dirty, blocked, outer issue, with the sensor within the unit like a just plain bad sensor or unit. Did you mop the floor with anything other than plain water by the detector? You say it started when you plugged into the truck? Maye it shorted out somehow.Check the wires for bare spots - if possible back to their source. I am sure their will be others chiming in to give input. Someone will have a solution I'm sure. If all else fails, replace it immediately. Do not go without it.

No, we didn’t have it connected for the 3 weeks between trips.

Thanks! We’re going to try to find an RV parts place in the Palm Springs area and get a new sensor. If that doesn’t work, we’ll just leave the propane off till we get back home and take it in for service.

The sensor will beep with low voltage. I imagine your batteries are/were dead and when you plugged in the truck it provided enough power to power the alarm but still low voltage and beeping started.

If the beeping has stopped now (wired back up) it is probably fine because batteries are charged/charging back up.
