Any Tips/Tricks for Condensation in Closets/Cupboards on Cold Nights in a 27RL?

We love our 27RL and everything about it. It's got everything we need and it all works very well. One issue we've run into is when we're staying in colder weather, nights in the high 20s & low 30s, we're getting quite a bit of condensation on the exterior walls inside the cupboards and closets. So we've been taking clothes out, drying the walls off, etc but it would be much better if we could reduce/eliminate the issue with some slick trick that one of you has discovered. We're concerned if we just ignore it, we could end up starting mildew/mold issues a year or two down the road.

I know if indoor humidity is too high, it will create condensation on colder exterior windows, which we can live with, but we'd like to avoid it on the walls if possible. We close the bathroom doors and run the bathroom exhaust fan when taking showers to reduce/contain the humidity created from showers. The only thing I could think of was to run one of ceiling exhaust fans at night with the lid slightly open to help reduce the more humid air inside the trailer??? We still have the original ceiling exhaust fans that it comes with. I suspect this is less of an issue with 5th wheel models that are higher up the food chain with thicker wall insulation.....

Any tips/tricks on this issue that anyone can share?

    Thanks all,

    Paul

Find yourself a mid size dehumidifier. This is the one we got and it works well even to help keep condensation off of the windows. Maybe even get a smaller separate one for the closet.

We've not had any condensation issue with ours though we always have a couple of windows cracked open and the same with all three roof vents. If you're running the furnace, it will had to the problem. We seldom ever run the furnace, just the fireplace and a couple of ceramic heaters.

The use of a dehumidifier will help and opening some of the cabinet doors would help too.

Thanks for the small dehumidifier suggestion Andy. I took a look at it and ordered the same one today.

    Thanks,

    Dave,

Are you saying you leave your ceiling vents open and windows cracked when you're camping in colder weather? If that's true, have you installed the larger covers on the ceiling vents so no rain can leak in if it rains? I can see where it would help humidity to escape insider the trailer, but don't you find it to get awfully cold inside, if it's in the high 20s to lower 30s at night? Thanks for any insights you can share from your experiences,

    Paul,

Here are some links I found for condensation in an RV. It looks like the folks above are right on track:

    KOA Article:
    http://rvservices.koa.com/rvinformat...in-your-rv.asp

This article gives a link to a small portable dehumidifier that doesn't take up too much room in an RV.

It looks like cooking, showering and breathing are the main culprits. I'd recommend that you keep breathing though...

Yes, we have vent covers on all roof vents. It will result in some heat loss but that's the price to control the humidity. I remember our earlier days camping in a pop-up in cold weather and having it rain condensation in the tent ends from not having enough air exchange.

Dave, we are going to start cracking the roof vents slightly and see if that will help. We'll adjust the fireplace and ceramic heater as needed. We also ordered the midsize dehumidifier that Andy recommended too. So between those two things, we should be in much better shape. It's funny you mention the rain inside your pop-up from condensation. We had the same thing when we tent camped for years, unless we left the windows open. Our Reflection 27RL is the first trailer we've owned, so it feels like the Taj Mahal to us after camping in a tent for several decades with our kids.

Jim, we will keep on breathing as long as we are able, that's funny!

    Thanks for everyone's help!

You're welcome. One more suggestion: When we DO get condensation on the windows, turning on the main A/C (fan only) does a good job of circulating the air and drying things fairly quickly.
