Forward maneuvering TT vs Fifth wheel
Folks, I need to tap into your experience. My question is about which turns better forward, with same truck and trailer length. I understand the differences in backing up but what about turning into tight streets?.
The background of the question is the entrance to our home. Not only will turning into the street that leads to our residence be a challenge, getting in through the gate will be even more one. When we get hay delivered, the guy (RAM 3500 LB and 25ft Fifth wheel trailer) prefers to back into the driveway backwards, that means, he turns into a small pathway of our neighbors and backs up into our driveway. One part of the difficulty is not only the narrowness of the gate opening, it's also that the driveway leading to the barn turns right after the gate in a 45 degree angle. We won't go that route and wouldn't be bothered to have the wheels go over our lawn (which is no show lawn), we have a farm. The concern is clearly the shortcut the fifth wheel will be making when turning in from the street through the gate.
He feels we won't make it through with a 31ft fifth wheel. Would we make it through with a 31ft camper? If all fails, by being pulled with a tractor?
I mean, there's always the option to take the gate down...

Travel trailers don't tend to cut to the inside in forward turns quite as much as fifth-wheels, but it sounds like it might be a real challenge for you either way. I'm guessing you'll end up modifying the gate regardless. Given that, you might as well get the trailer you really want.

With experience, a 5th wheel is more maneuverable—much or most of the time. That assumes you have the cab clearance to make a turn close to or even tighter than 90. I can turn my 24’ stock trailer around on a county road.

To many variables to say ... truck length means a lot ... long bed with crew vs regular bed with quad/reg cab .... how much room to swing out? most new drivers turn to early ... I pulled bumper pulls in business for 25 years and will always pick a 5ver ... what's the gate construction ? easy to enlarge gate ? best of luck ... later Frank

I believe I may have a similar issue trying to get my Reflection 5th wheel OUT of the property entrance. I had the top post removed because it was only 13.0’ of clearance and my 5th wheel is close to 13’ 6”
Now I’m wondering if I can get it out without hitting the vertical poles with tail swing. I took some measurements and next time I’m at the property I’ll see if it’s an issue or not.
The axles are 12 feet from the rear wall and the 5th wheel pin is 24’ from axles. The trailer is 8’ wide.Jerry & Linda

Either way it sounds like the gate turn going forward won't work. It might be time for a new gate.
At my previous home I had a situation that prevented me from backing into my driveway. Forget ever trying to pull straight in. It had to do with a neighborhood street and mailboxes. In the end I had to back in from the 'blind side' and eventually I relocated my mail box and widened the apron to the driveway. And then I had to build a pad along the side of the house as I could no longer back behind the price. ooooh the price we pay for our toys!!Larry KE4DMG

5th wheels react going forwards and backwards differently than TT's. BTDT.
A 5th wheel can turn a sharper tighter corner such as in a tighter circle. A TT can still turn tight but probably not near the 90+ degrees a 5er can.
A 5th wheel will under normal circumstances tracks inside more on turns.
The bigger difference is when you're backing up. A 5er needs a different angle than a TT and reacts much slower to driver input. You can correct the direction of a TT much faster than a 5er.
If you're pulling forwards with a 5er into a tight area and are still in a turning position with the truck, then backing up from that position will require more distance to correct the 5ers path.

Looks like room to me ... tail swing might get close to neighbors mailbox ... if you moved your mailbox and flared driveway a little at the road left side might be good ... how long is the truck? later Frank
