    Campgrounds Near Anchorage, Alaska

We are planning our trip to Alaska this summer and need suggestions for RV parks near Anchorage. We don't need to be in Anchorage but close enough to drive to it. We plan to stay about a week in this area.

Also, what are some must-see or things to do in this area?

Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks so much!

I lived in Anchorage for a few years. I used to drive down Turnagain arm to Girdwood almost every evening in the summer. The views never got old, and many nights there would be a pod of Beluga whales swimming near the shore. I'd recommend eating at the Double Musky in Girdwood (once anyway). Their French Pepper Steak is amazing. The Anchorage locals like to hike the Flattop Mountain Trail to get a nice view of the city and the Cook Inlet. Portage glacier is a nice destination (if it hasn't melted completely), and driving through the tunnel to Whittier is an interesting experience.

I can't help at all with the campground question, sorry.

We did an Alaska/Canada caravan trip (through Fantasy RV Tours) and we stayed at

Very convenient to any thing you want to do in Anchorage. We went out to the airport to see the museum there. Also took the truck in the Ford place for an oil change We were only there for a couple of days, so didn't have a lot of time. Oh, we also went to the Indian Heritage Center, that was very interesting.

Pardon . The digression, Was Fantasy Tours worth it. Guessing at least another 50% to budget gas, own meals and incidentals.

Now back to the original topic.

Yes, totally worth it. We've already done another event with Fantasy(Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta) and have a second caravan booked this summer.

Oh the memories this brings to mind!!! In 2011, we made the trip to Alaska and spent about 8 weeks in/out of the state. We made the trip on our own. Although, we often felt like we were in a caravan since there were so many others going the same direction. Outside of Anchorage, we camped at Homestead RV Park in Palmer. In Anchorage, we stayed at Eagle River State park (no hookups).

Be sure to get you the Milepost Travel book. It literally tells you what to expect at each milepost on all the major roads through BC, the Yukon, and of course Alaska. It's a trip of a lifetime for sure!!!

X2 on Milepost book. Keep in mind Anchorage has a city ordinance that prohibits parking overnight in any of the big box store lots. You do have to find a Campground.

Thanks, all for the suggestions! Yes, we have the Milepost and a couple other books but nothing's better than a good recommendation! Good to know about not parking overnight at big box stores in Anchorage. This is definitely the trip of a lifetime! The idea of taking this trip is one of the reasons we started RVing. We have a lot planned and we are looking forward to the memories we will create.
