Boondocking on the St. Joe River ID.

Great camping spot about 10.5 miles past the tiny town of Avery ID. A few established Forest Service campgrounds nearby but this one is basically a flat spot next to the St. Joe river. Just about every outdoor activity can be found in this area:
    https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/ipnf...ea/?recid=6891

Summer, especially on the weekends can be quite crowded. I tend to camp May to early June then again after Sept. 15th or so. Very quiet except for the archery hunters at the end of Sept. (well they are very quiet but you might see them camped out up high when cruising the back country. Fishing is all catch and release with 99% being Cutthroat Trout (14"-16" range). The area where I camp is rated a world class fly fishery.

There are hundreds of miles of ORV riding from the camp. You ride east over the ridge and come out in the town of Wallace ID or St. Regis MT. Many of the roads are good enough for 4x4 vehicles. There are dozens of dispersed camping spots off the river itself. Closer the the town of St. Maries ID. along the St. Joe river road are RV full hookup sites too. I have never stayed at one. I road one Sat. afternoon for 4 hours and passed one pickup 10 miles in or so.

This first picture is the approach off the main road (St. Joe River Road) to the camp spot. It is clearly visible on Google Earth satellite view. Easy access even for the longest rigs. You can camp in the upper section (shown here) or if you notice you can make a right turn and camp within 50' of the river. Note: If you click on the pictures it will open a larger version.

    A few more pictures:
There is plenty of hiking/walking trails too. SxS are allowed on the roads in this area with off road registration stickers from reciprocal states.

This last picture is looking back towards the entrance from the main road. There are some good spots on either side. It's about 400' long and as you can see empty. I was there from Wed. to Sun. and all the sites remained empty.

Thanks for sharing the camp site.
Whenever I head east thru Idaho on the motorcycle, I take 12 or 21 thru Stanley. It's all about the great scenery.

I'll be in contact with you Kevin when we need a boondock spot for our Solitude.

    Later, KEN

    Hi Ken,
Maybe we can meet up? I still work but can pretty much take off when I want.

We are still working too. My wife has picked January 2022 as retirement month. I'll probably choose Dec. 17 2021 as my last day.

I will be riding the roads near Prairie City, Oregon all of Memorial Week. I drag the Solitude over there with the bike in the garage each year.

Are you going to the Washington Rally?

Someday; once we retire we will get to roam a bit farther. KEN

When I was hired at my company I told my boss I was going to retire in 5 years, that was 7 years ago The company was really struggling. They tried to sell but couldn't find a buyer so I told them I would get them going. I also wanted to get them ISO 9001 certified. That was completed yesterday. I expect the sales transaction to be complete in less than 90 days. We'll see what type retention bonus they offer. I live about 1 mile (4 stop signs) from work and work my own hours so it's pretty convenient. The very longest I will work is Dec. 31st. 2023.

I'm not attending the Washington rally. I am planning to go to Oregon Sand Lake Recreation area next month to ride my SxS on the beach hopefully I can find a spot right on the beach. I'll arrive on a Tue or Wed which usually helps beat the the weekend crowd. I'm trying to find some land (20-120 acres) around Hamilton Montana to summer /home base then winter down south (Quartzsite/Tucson area). I have a list of off road areas in So Cal I want to revisit from dirt bike days

    Kevin
