    tire rotation with spare?

Since we have a full-size spare, does anyone rotate the Westlakes with the spare so you get 1/5 more tire?

If you do, how many miles?

Do you rotate with spare with other tire brands on the trailer? (of course we do on the truck).

I do a 4 tire rotation when I inspect the brakes, & pack the bearings (1X year). The spare is on a steel wheel on my Solitude.

No spare change, also on steel wheel. I make sure it’s always at max pressure just in case I need it.

Yup the spare is a throw away tire. It doesnt matter how old it is but you do need to look at it every trip to make sure it's ok if you need it. I check the pressure and make sure it's full of air. If it is completely flat than the tire is junk and you need to replace it. Tires don't lose air just sitting there. Remember that you are only using this tire till you can get another tire. Not going another 1,000 miles to get you home.

I do see the value in doing a five tire rotation, but my spare is also on a steel wheel. I would like to have it mounted on the same type of rim as the rest of the tires and will find a matching rim. If anyone knows where to buy rims at a reasonable price, please speak up.

Gordo - I agree and would include the spare in the rotation if we had a matching wheel rather than a steel wheel. Back in the day it was normal practice to do this on autos and trucks. The approach today would be no different trusting a matching tire.

Not certain what Bone is stating about a "throw away tire" unless referencing a compact type of spare or something else used frequently in autos these days.

I do recall some folks over the years getting a matching aluminum wheel from Etrailer. I trust you could try Lionshead and possibly GDRV Customer Service for feedback or even possibly buying from them too if they do so.

    Thanks for the information

We are looking at purchasing a 303rls and was wondering about the spare tire and wheel.
I was wondering about using the spare tire in my tire rotation..like you said its on a non matching steel wheel.

Trying to find a video on how to lower the spare tire on the 303 rls..can anyone help?

    Many thanks

I’ve only done it once, during the PDI, to check and ensure that everything worked. As I recall, you use the same long crank that you can use to bring in the slide, if you have issues. It seems like it goes in from the curb side, if I remember correctly. It’s dark outside and a bit of snow, and I’m too lazy to go out and look. Hope this helps.

Also, we got two extra monitors for the TPMS. One went on the truck spare and one on the trailer spare. We have TPMS for all tires on both the truck and trailer.

Not certain on any videos out there but it is pretty easy and quick to do.

On the curb side slide there is a hole and black ring on the lower panel just to the back of the rear tire. GDRV provides a crank tool which inserts through this hole to raise and lower the spare. I have done a few times using a drill/socket/extension to make the process even faster.

Here is a picture where you can see the black ring on our 303.

Actually, I believe that is where you would put the crank for the street-side slide, should you need to retract it manually. At least that’s how mine is set up. On ours, there is a crank fitting a little further back, under the unit and just to the curb side of the spare. The long wrench fits there, to lower the spare. That’s where I hang a trouble light when parked at home, because I can see it from my dining room and I can be sure that the power is on in the trailer (charging the battery, etc.) We plug the trouble light into the outlet in the basement of the rig, running the cord up through one of the water connection openings.
