Micro-Air Easy Start
I know that there are quite a few postings about installing these on RVs, but we had new heat and air system put in our house last fall and everytime the air conditioning started it sounded like a gun going off. So I called Micro-Air and talked to one of the guys there who had recently put one on his house air conditioning. Today I had our service tech come out for the spring tune up and asked him to install the 368 (6 ton) soft starter from Micro-Air. I had given them a heads up a couple of months ago with literature and a downloaded installation manual. They checked and said it wouldn't void any Trane warranties. So it took him less than and hour, we ran several cycles and he was pretty amazed, saying it was only drawing a little over 7 amps while starting up! So I consider this a RV to Home owner win! Stay safe out there.

Thanks for putting up your experience. I need to talk to my HVAC service company about installing one on our system.

That question on the bill is a valid one. Any motor draws the most current on start up, it's called FLA or full load amps. In the case of an A/C compressor LRA or locked rotor amps. Then the current draw slopes down until the system equalizes. A/C systems are intentionally undersized for several reasons. By running longer start ups are reduced. The last thing you want is your compressor or condenser unit cycling continuously.
