    Homemade masks

Made four of them, so far. Hubby only wanted one, and I made one for his brother who's in an assisted living facility. He does dialysis 3x/wk, but hubby only has to take him 1x/wk, so I'll be able to wash his each time. And I made 2 for myself.

I used some left over material. Found several patterns online, using elastic or rubber bands, but I modified a little and used velcro instead. And all material is washable.

If we're having to wear them, and least they look half way decent!Click image for larger version.

They definitely look better than the ones I made. It had been many years since I used a sewing machine, and my wife didn't have the most stylish fabric scraps. I was getting the hang of it again by the fourth and final one. I think masks should help quite a bit with folks unwittingly sharing a virus they don't know they have. I figure I'll wear it if I get desperate and have to enter a store. My overall goal is to see if I can go the distance without entering a store.

So what are you using for a bacteria and pathogen barrier? Cloth, even several layers, will not slow down a particulate as large as smoke. It does nothing for a molecules.

They're not meant to be the end all, be all perfect solution, nor are they meant to be of a surgical quality.

However, even as recommended by the CDC, along with other appropriate actions that we personally adhere to, they can help to some degree, albeit minimally.

Wearing a mask is a good idea. Here's a list of effectiveness in materials. Throw a coffee filter in those cotton masks. When the mask needs disinfecting, throw it in the oven for 30 mins at 200 degrees.

No clue. But I do understand coffee filters.

Most of the homemade masks won't provide much protection for the person actually wearing the mask. The idea is centered on reducing the odds that I inadvertently infect someone else. Hopefully my homemade mask provides a barrier that captures some of the larger material (virus + water) associated with unexpected coughs/sneezes and normal speech. To some extent I think there may be a benefit for simple breathing as well since the exhaled air is slowed down considerably before leaving the face. This may help reduce convective transfer of the virus, although it does little for someone who immediately occupies "my" space after I leave. Ideally we'd all have N95 masks, but I think there is a reasonable argument that wide adoption of homemade masks could help reduce transmission and flatten the curve faster.

Agreed, not surgical or even PPE capable. I guess as long as your aware this will only stop a droplet and hold it against your face and allow any viruses or pathogens pass through. IMHO when supplies are low people will tell you what you need to hear to keep the masses calm. There isn't a firefighter, paramedic, nurse or doctor that I know thinks this will slow the spread.
