Equalizer 1,000 lb vs 1.200 lb Bars

I am running the Equalizer 4 pt 1,000#/10,000# hitch and have been considering upgrading to 1,200# bars. On the Equalizer site, they say you have to match the bars to the head unit so that wouldn't work. Are the head units different? Does anybody have any experience doing this?

Yes, you can't just change the bars. You need a new head unit to match the bars. As the bars go up in weight, the thickness changes.

    The socket size changes.

FWIW - this thread summarizes my decision-making... For my 2670, I just went with the 1400# bars. 15% of GVWR would put me at 1275. It's only a shade more than the 1200 bars are designed to meet... but then again, it is more than the design spec.

I thought 2670mk’s were light on the tongue weight? Am I thinking if a different model?

I’m in the same boat with the 10k equalizer. I have 7 washers on my 2500L. With propane and battery it’s 830lb on the tongue, I wish I went with a 1200lb unit. At 8 washers I get a porpusing on the highway.

I have not tried 8 washers. At 7, I am really ok so far but I worry a little at being close to the edge of the range - would be more comfortable at 4-5 washers.

Good thread and analysis. How many washers did you end up with on the 1400# bars? Did you get the porpoising sorted out?

I am surprised with the 1400# hitch that your washer count is not less than 4. So maybe my 7 is not so bad. Have you checked the rig on a CAT scale with the 5 washers? How much weight is your front truck axle down with TT attached and WDH in place?

This may or may not help. I was debating between the 1200/12000 and the 1400/14000 Equal-i-zer setups (long story short, I had a chance to get a 14 for cheaper than a 12). Here's what I was told by the folks at Equal-i-zer -

The only difference between the 14K and 12K Equalizer is the bolt channel that connects the head to the shank is 1/2" thick on a 14K where it is 3/8" thick on the 12K. The spring arms are identical on the 14K and 12K. They are 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" high carbon chromoly spring steel. The shank that comes with both is rated at 1400/14000 lbs.
