Replacing water heater - electrical issue

I am replacing my suburban 12 gallon water heater with a Girard tankless model. When I went to wire up the Girard, there is a black and red wire coming from the heater, but a black, red, and orange wire coming from the switches in the control panel in the rig. Does anyone know what the orange wire is for? I have hooked black to black and red to red, but the unit is not getting a full 12 volts.

I'd bet it's for gas or electric mode and red would be the other one, black would be ground (negative terminal).

Please, please, please get professional assistance! Even though it sounds like it is 12 volts, could be dangerous and possible disaster. Life is too short.

I'm going to guess, since the original poster last posted here 3 years ago, they aren't here to answer you.
