For me it wasn't because my RV fridge wouldn't get cold. I switched because I couldn't maintain consistent temperatures without adjusting the setting twice per day - once in the AM and once in the PM. If you put a wireless thermometer in the fridge, you'll see the swing in temps. Residential fridges are much better at maintaining consistent internal temperatures regardless of ambient temps. You also don't need to worry about ice build up, fixing door flaps and seals, moving the thermistor, adding fans inside and outside, replacing control boards, etc.

Of course, the drawback of residential fridges is you need shore power, a generator or a good sized battery bank.

Blue masking tape worked quite well as a "just until we get there" solution for the Whirlpool residential I installed in my Class A.

    residential fridge question

[QUOTE=KamFlyer;300694]OK, another question. Other than the Samsung RF18 res fridge, has anyone installed any other brands/models?[/QUOTE

I went with a Kitchen Aide 20 cu ft residential fridge, which I bought at Home Depot. So far I'm absolutely delighted with it, for all the reasons you keep reading about. It keeps the freezer at zero and the fridge at 38, and never varies much from that. I'm on my 5th day of boondocking and so far I haven't had to use a generator at all, although I do have 960 watts of solar to work with.
It was within fractions of an inch of the No Cold fridge, and required no particular modifications.

As for keeping the doors shut when underway, I have a piece of heavy duty Velcro, 2" wide and 15" long, which I wrap around the two door handles on the side by side handles. When it's snugged up, the doors can't open. Easy peasy and pretty much foolproof, so long as I remember to put it in place. It's on my getting underway checklist.

Got the Fridge Fixer installed and thought I'd post a couple of pics. The installation was very easy, and it's extremely secure. The only thing I'm not super pleased about is the distortion in the door caused by the screws for the original latch that came on the unit. I found some low-profile screws to fill the holes so the new latch slide in and out easily. I forgot to take a photo of it, but the T latch has a magnet in it so it just stores on the front of the freezer drawer.
