Sanitization before first use?
Hi all. Taking the 23BHE out for the first time in a week. Should I sanitize the system before first use? Thx!

Yes, sir! The factory only leak checks and does no sanitizing.

Just follow the directions in your manual. The manual used to have a ridiculous amount of bleach amount used. If they haven't changed it with ours I use 4 to 5 cups of bleach and we haven't died yet

For a new unit, I'd recommend starting with a leak test. Little freshwater in the tank and use pump. Check all plumbing connections for leaks and tighted as needed. Bypass your water heater because that gets sterilized when you heat your water. Personally, I like the dilute bleach solution to sit overnight. Flush very well after until you can't detect the bleach. Then fill your system, run the hot water heater till water is hot and then run hot water at each faucet and check plumbing connections again for leaks.

1/4 cup of bleach for every 15 gallons of freshwater capacity is the rule-of-thumb that's been used as far back as I can remember. A little bit goes a long way!

When you flush out the tanks, I assume you leave open all the valves underneath the RV as well, while running water into the gravity fill?

Agree with Geotex; 1/4 cup per 15 gallons. I have always heard not to add straight bleach. Get the tank at least half full first and pump diluted bleach from a 5 gallon bucket. Finish filling with clean water. Run it through all the lines. Let it sit several hours. Flush. Repeat flush if needed.

Here is what I do. Not familiar with your exact model of camper, but the process shoudl be similar.
Sanitizing the Fresh Water System
Use the following procedures to sanitize your Fresh Water
System (or Potable Water System) when it is new, becomes
contaminated, or has not been used for a period of time.
• Prepare a Chlorine Solution using one (1) gallon of
water and one-quarter (1/4) cup of household bleach
(5% Sodium Hypo-Chlorate solution).
• Prepare approximately one (1) gallon of solution for
every fifteen (15) gallons of holding tank capacity.
NOTE: As an option, several commercial solutions are
available, and should be used as directed on the package.
To sanitize the fresh water tank & fresh water system:
1. LEVEL the RV.
2. OPEN the Fresh Water Holding Tank Gate Valve and drain
out any water in the tank. CLOSE the valve when drained.
3. CHECK that the Low Point Drain Valves are CLOSED.
4. Please refer to page 110, Nautilus P1 Manual for detailed
procedures and specific valve positions. This part will probably be different for yours.
5. CONNECT a garden hose to the City Water Connection.
DO NOT use your fresh (potable) water hose.
◦◦ PLACE the other end of the hose into the container
of * Chlorine Solution.
6. Turn ON the water pump until the container
containing the chlorine solution is empty.
7. COMPLETE filling the tank with fresh water.
8. Operate all faucets to release trapped air, then
Turn OFF the pump.
9. ALLOW solution to stand for three (3) hours.
10. DRAIN tank and FLUSH the system with fresh water.
To remove excessive chlorine odor or taste
which may remain:
11. Thoroughly rinse with fresh water.
