    Imagine AC Mod

The AC in Dear daughter's Imagine has only On/Off controls, no thermostat.

Is there any way to add a thermostat to this unit?

    Problems no thermostat causes:
In warm or humid weather, you must leave on all night, or get up multiple times.
If the power goes off, even for a few seconds the AC goes off and will not come back on without manually resetting the switch.

    Thanks for any help.

    I believe it is a 2018 model 21BDH

I am not sure of the AC model, but it is mounted in the ceiling and all controls are on the unit.

I am on the road with little cell service. I should be able to have a picture and more information tomorrow.

    Thanks

Ya that’s an easy project. Just got to figure out a few things. How many wires are at the switch. What’s running on the wires, line voltage or is it control voltage.

If it line voltage I don't think it will be, you may have to get a heavier switch like a baseboard heater switch.

If it’s control voltage then most any thermostat would work. I would recommend an electronic one. They hold better temps.

If you could, take some pics of the switch and location would help out a lot.

Thank you for the response and I apologize for being slow to respond. We were on the road.

As I said the Imagine is my daughters so I don't have immediate access to it. It is a Dometic unit.

Attached are pictures of the unit in the ceiling with the controls.

So it sounds like I need to open the cover and check out the wiring?

Keep in mind that RV thermostats use 12 volts for control - different from residential units. They are not interchangeable.

If you look up the brand of AC unit, there are factory kits that provide a plug-in board to the AC unit that allows control by a thermostat. Here is a dometic one ... https://www.amazon.com/Dometic-33162...090710&sr=8-17

The Amazon one I posted may not be correct for your Dometic AC - you would need to cross-reference your model number to make sure you get the correct kit. Some kits replace the manual controls on the unit, others just add a bypass of the manual controls - ie: you place the unit in Max cool mode and let the wall thermostat cycle the unit.

Part of our issue with the current setup is that if the power goes out, even for a few seconds, the AC will shut down and will not restart without manually turning it off and back on. And we all know how fickle campground power can be.

This is a problem if you have left for the day and come back to a 95 degree RV. You know how long it takes to cool those guys down. So, I wonder if this would overcome that problem.
