New Fords w/ Built In Gen
I see that 2021 Ford trucks will have the option of adding a built in 7.2Kw gen, which does have a 30am plug. I didn’t see any info regarding decibels or inverter tech. I imagine the markup is staggering though. I’m also curious how it will vent for overnight use with the 5th wheel attached I’d like to see it vent at the front of the truck
I can’t get the link to paste but it’s on CNBCBob & Donna - Maryland

Yeah, I saw that in the press release. It's a VERY interesting option. 30A is pretty decent coming from an OEM truck mounted genset. Let's see what the details are as to where the fuel source is coming from. Is it part of the battery backup of the hybrid technology or is it gas fed?

I found this...

Looks like the truck itself is the power source and must remain running to power the gen. It also apprears the 7.2kw is only available on the F150, which is silly considering the article says its designed to power a typical 4Kw RVBob & Donna - Maryland

Interesting! So both gensets require the hybrid system. The 7.2 kW genset is going to be a big deal. It can deliver 30 amps at full output for 32 hours of engine run time on a full tank of gas. That's more than most folks need to charge up the batteries. And this means that you can arrive at the campsite with your RV batteries fully charged.
I hope this system eventually makes its way to the SuperDuty trucks!

That is a very cool feature for sure! The other manufactures are saying "dang it what will Ford think of next?!" lol. I'm sure it will be in the Super Duty's in a year or so. They are probably trying to re-engineer the under bed area to accommodate it. If you notice it sits right in the spot that the SD's have the 7/12 plug receptacle at. No need for that plug in the half tons. Pretty cool features all around though.

Ummm... What's all the excitement for? You've been able to get a PTO-driven generator on any of the Big 3 for two decades or more via upfit. Vanair has been making probably the best units for 12-15 years.

It really depends how it's done. If it's run straight from the engine (so you have to leave the truck running), and your vehicle is gas, yeah, that's gonna be expensive to run. A diesel uses very, very little fuel at idle (which would produce plenty of HP to run 7.2KW) so that might be a lot more reasonable. And the "right way" to do it, which hopefully is how they did it or will do it, use the truck engine to charge another battery, use that battery to run an inverter back to the RV. When that battery goes low, power up the truck automatically, recharge, then power back down. If the battery can take high amp charging, it would be very fast to fill back up and lot less fuel (kind of like an inverter generator that auto adjusts RPM).
Either way, pretty cool, something I'd really like to have; another way to power the RV while towing it (keep the AC/heat running/fridge/etc) and a backup for the generator on the RV should things go south.
