    Replacing garage anchors

    Hello all,

My 395m has had a failure, with the bolts that secure the tie-down anchors rusting and breaking off unfortunately , this happened while on the road, resulting in my bike laying down for a good bit of the trip.

When I started looking into the problem , it seems the frame and bolt combination exacerbates rusting and the bolts get brittle. This causes them to snap.

So now I have 2 anchors with 2 busted bolts each. This means I need to remove the broken bolts, or drill and tap anew. Is there a way to do this without pulling the floor up?

Any advice or insight is appreciated. I'd really like to get this fixed, and maybe even fortify the install to improve on the original design.

Thanks in advance for your time and consideration!

I would say the screw heads on about half of mine busted off without even using the anchors.

I replaced all my fasteners with SS nuts, bolts and lock washers. If I remember, I used 1/4" bolts and the center bolt was shorter than the outer bolts. The easiest way to get the old broken shanks out are to go under the camper and use vice grips to hold on to the broken screws. Keep turning them in the tighten direction and they will continue down to under the camper. My garage has no coroplast under it so it was easy to access. I did have to drill the holes to 1/4" since the self tapping screws GD uses are a hair smaller. Click image for larger version.

Thanks for the guidance, it's nice to know someone else has walked this path before me.

I will take your advice and try to get to the bottom of the broken self-tapping screws, and I like your idea of fortifying the anchors with better hardware.
