If your Volvo is rated for 26,000 lbs GVWR then you can drive the truck without the trailer and not need a CDL. Im not sure about the air brakes though, you might need an endoresment on your license. If you tow a trailer with a GVWR of over 10,000 lbs you have to add that to the combined GVWR which puts you way over the 26,001. Now you need a class A CDL. If your trailer GVWR was less than 10,000 lbs you would not need a CDL. Where I work we are required to have a class A CDL when we tow a trailer rated at over 10,000 lbs with an F550 dump because the combined GVWR is over 26,001 lbs.

Depending upon the state - most, if the truck is titled and registered as an RV then the weight issues are not applicable as it relates to a CDL.

Thats a good point. I didn't realize a truck like that could be registered as an RV. Looks like you would know, thanks.

Talked with a State Police DOT Officer on Wednesday, at the scale house when i was heading back to the terminal.
    26,001 is the number !
26,000, and in NM, all I need is a regular drivers license.
    20k 5th wheel on it ?
No matter weight, its NOT Commercial.
65 foot doubles length law, is for commercial.
Asked specifically if I'm 86 feet long, pulling my 5th wheel, and a 24 foot boat, am i legal ?
If commercial, no, as a non, yes.
He said there are very few laws restricting non commercial towing.
He said if he sees me with an HDT towing that long, he won't blink an eye. If he see a F250, and its squatted, and weaving, he's gonna stop him.
He said make sure I have private rv, not for hire on it too.
Lots of making money hauling campers. If you get pulled over, and your not hauling your trailer, or have the owner of a trailer with you, be prepared to be fined for commercial use.
Told him i was going to add decals to match my trailer. He said good idea to avoid getting stopped. It shows a cop your legit, pulling your trailer.
    Soooo,
    86 feet, here I come !!

    Not sure ?
My truck weighs in around 16-17k, gross on the 376th is 20k, and my boat is around 5-6k.
So let's say 42k give or take.
Fuel mileage, I don't really care about, but the computer is showing 9 - 9.5 mpg, depending on terrain, and how much i wind it up per gear.
Haven't had it long enough yet, or towed very far to really get a good idea.
The Volvo holds 200 gallons of fuel, so at 9 mpg, I should have a range of about 1,400 miles before I need to start looking to fuel up.

That is nice! We get about 8 or 9 mpg so with only a 32 gallon tank, our range is only 300 miles max. So basically after I fuel up, when I get back on the freeway I start looking for the next fuel station. Would be nice to have your range.
