Red face First NEW trailer purchase. What about extended warranty?

We are picking up our new Reflection 297RSTS on Saturday. We are not ones to buy extended warranties, but wondering if the extra cost of $1,400.00 for four more years is worth it? We have been camping for 28 years, but have bought many used trailers and even tents. This is the first time we have purchased a brand new unit. Thank you for any help.

If you're 'handy', it's not worth it.

My question is how stable is the one providing the coverage? Is it the dealer or is this just another profit maker for them?

I wouldn't ever buy any ESP if the company is not a really major player in the ESP business--and bonded and insured specfically by an outside major insurance company. Any non-insured ESP wouldn't necessarily be worth the paper it's written on if the company goes out of business. And we know the RV business has not been very strong since the economic downfall of 2008.

I called the dealer and they said it is through Premiere RV Insurance, hopefully this means something to someone. I bought my last trailer used and had great experience with no warranty until recently.

I think if you'd put $400 a year into a savings account, in a few years you will have enough saved to cover most major expenses

I think it probably comes to your financial situation and coverage. If you don't think you have the discipline to set aside $ to cover things that may go wrong once you are out of the warranty period, and you are not comfortable tackling minor or major repairs on your own then an extended warranty is probably right for you. If you have discipline and are "handy" as other have said, maybe not. The other thing to consider is what does the extended warranty actually cover. Is it a true "bumper to bumper" warranty, or are certainly things excluded? Just my humble $.02 and your actual mileage may vary.

Oh and welcome to the GD family.

Thank you all for your replies. I think the "if you are handy" remarks have made us decide that we will go with the factory warranty. We live on a farm, we have to be somewhat handy. I am very excited, we have never owned a new camper. I have done a lot of research and decided the Grand Design sounds like the quality I am looking for. I am looking forward to being a part of the community.
