    Generator compartment safe for storage?

Hello all! New here and proud owner of a new 2020 ST373FB.

Is it safe to store my portable generators (2) in the front generator compartment while traveling?

I think my Dometic LW3000 weighs around 80 pounds and my smart tools 2000 W generator weighs around 45 pounds.

Thanks! Having s fifth wheel for the first time leaves me thinking of different storage ideas.

    Dave

I store mine there. But I carry the gas in the bed of my truck and only put some in the generators when necessary. And If I am not going to use the generators again for a while I drain them and run them dry before putting the back in the front storage bay.

I raised the floor of the compartment a bit after my first year carrying them - I didn't like having to lift them over the lip of the compartment. Here is a photo of the platform.....

I considered adding some more venting to the compartment. Since I have AGM batteries I removed the battery boxes and sealed the bottom vent holes. I still have the intake vent/port and thought I could made another vent into the propane tank area. I'm just a bit hesitant about venting there so haven't done anything yet. It doesn't really get very gassy or smell so more vents is not the top of my list.

    Thanks travel dawg!!!

    Much appreciated.

I was planning on the same thing with the gas can. Going to keep it in the bed of the truck.

I’m going to have some fuel in the generator, but gas valve will be off.

The “floor” seems kinda flimsy, I imagine there is some sort of structure below the aluminum/ steel floor.

    I appreciate your insight!

After driving behind a pick up truck whos gas can was in the bed and watched it ignite out of the clear blue there is no way I'd keep any gas in the generator that is in the trailer given the choice.

A little beefing up of the compartment certainly wouldnt hurt if it is built anything like our 303. It was only attached on the sides and rear, Not one screw was holding the front of the tray to the trailer.

Thanks. I guess I don’t know what to do. I’m thinking store the generator empty of fuel in the bed of truck towards the cab of the truck and empty gas cans. Fill gas cans when I get closer to campground.

Marcy - you sure that truck driver wasn't a smoker..... lol.... sorry couldn't resist... I read where some of those folks have sofas that 'spontaneously combust..... lol... .... With the open bed of the truck when towing I think it is pretty well ventilated - but one never knows for sure all the odd things that can happen.

I remove my gas container when I unhook and leave it in a shady place near the camper because I have a Roll-Top cover I close on the bed of the truck.

    Dave,
On the other side of the bay I have 4 AGM batteries. I didn't put in any extra support for them and so far there have been no issues. I did get some floor mats and covered the floor. They are the kind that are about 24" square and interlock. They make a nice bottom.
