One thing that I would note is the huge pins that run down through the saddle and jaws can become gaulded from corrosion which makes the unlocking handle harder to open or close without hitched up to the king pin. Along with maintenance, greasing the zerk fitting, a few shots of penetrating oil on these pins keep them free moving. I read one account where a guy had to have the pins pressed out and cleaning of the pins and the bores to free up the opening and closing of the jaws. Its also a good idea to keep the hitch covered when not in use.

I realized I didn't explain that very well, its hard to describe, if your locking handle is hard to open or close with your hitch just setting in your truck bed, not connected to the king pin, then get up there and move the locking handle open and closed and watch the jaws, you can see the shafts going through them moving back and forth in their bores, give a few shots of penetrating oil on those shafts and work the locking handle back and forth, it should free up and move easier.
