Companion Hitch not unlocking
I have a 25k BW Companion Hitch that I never had a problem unlocking until I replaced my pinbox with the Flex Air. I only have a problem every once in a while and I think it is all related to unlevel ground when unhitching. I make sure the weight is off the hitch but it will still not unlock. I saw post on etrailer saying that this can happen when unlevel and just to pull it apart. Haven’t tried that yet wanted to see if there was any other thoughts.

Sometimes my Reese Titan R20 will do the same thing, It has very tight tolerances. I have found I just need to slightly shift the truck for and aft - take any loading off the pin. I have my trailer chalked and landing gear down and just put the truck in neutral and have someone pull on the release arm.

Also had issues with my Reese but as Powerscol points out truck puts pressure on the pin forward or reverse and I set the emergency brake when I feel it has no pressure. That little roll after you put the truck in park will sometimes put that pressure on the pin.

I've had this happen with my Reese as well. What has always worked is to (make sure the king pin is still fully engaged first) rock the truck back and forth with my foot on the brake. Sometimes just putting the truck into neutral will take the pressure off the jaws enough to disengage them.

You may be having an issue I am not understanding from this post, but thought I’d mention... The Companion jaws are designed to release no matter what when the locking arm is opened all the way and you put the pin in the keeper hole, keeping the arm from returning forward. I used to not use the pin, but My releases started started sticking a bit, even with plenty of lubrication and no bind in the hitch pin / pin box. Since I have consistently used the keeper pin, my hitch jaws have never failed to open.

G n G, help me understand your post. Are you saying when you pull the pin and move the arm to the open position, you replace the pin in the hole and the B&W will always open? Thanks, Ed

On the companion there are 2 pin holes. One is used to lock the lever in the closed position, and there is another that holds the lever open to unhitch. I'll take a pic of mine in a little while when my wife gets home with the truck. I also have the flexair hitch and have not had any issue hitching or unhitching. What I do is once the 5'er is positioned,I lower the front landing legs and chock the trailer. I then put the truck in reverse (or drive depending on the slope of the site) and momentarily let off on the brake. Then put it in park. This relieves the pressure off the king pin. Swing and pin the lever in the open position and pull out. One of the reasons I chose this hitch is the locking action. If the lever is closed, the jaws are locked, just insert pin (or padlock). When the lever is in the open position (pinned so it won't close), the jaws will release.
