Diesel, I assume? If so, I use cruise control only on the flats when there is light to no traffic. I don't use it on grades (prefer to manage the shifting myself) or in traffic.

I use.....Cruise Control, Tow Haul mode, and Engine braking all the time when towing. Almost the exact same trailer as Frank P has except it's a Momentum 394M (no 1/2 bath in the garage area is the only difference in the two) Tow vehicle is a 2016 F350 Dually with the 3:73 rear end. The nice thing about the cruise control/tow haul mode/engine braking combination is that when you top a steep grade, you simply use the cruise control to slow the truck down to a safe speed for descent down the grade and re-engage the cruise to the new, slower speed....and let the truck do it's thing.....engine brake, downshift and maintain the preset speed. Very seldom do I have to use the brakes in those instances.

I'm also in the camp that uses cruise control consistently when towing. Especially with modern diesels I just let the truck do its thing. This of course depends on the terrain and traffic flow. If it's a winding road where one must slow frequently for curves, obviously I use the skinny pedal for more control. Ditto if traffic is heavy and speed isn't constant. I find the truck seems to handle both up and down grades more steadily using cruise, more specifically down grades using tow/haul mode and engine braking, which is less taxing on the brakes and drive train. It's also less fatiguing for me so I can stay more alert.

Edited to add: If your transmission is hunting, defined as very frequent up or down shifting, you need to adjust your speed to keep the transmission in a select gear. Infrequent up or down shifting is harmless to the transmission.

I love the Adaptive Cruise Control on my F350. Towed 5,500 miles recently and rarely didn't have it on Cruise Control.

Ford trucks actually recommend not using cruise control and the exhaust brake at the same time. So when towing up a Hill or on level ground I use cruise control most all the time usually set at about 70 miles an hour through the more moderate States that allow higher speed limits. But when descending down a Hill I will use the break to turn off the cruise control then turn on the exhaust brake and set my speed down the Hill using the brake pedal and then letting the truck do the rest on exhaust brake.

Toyota also recommends to NOT use cruise when towing. Actually, unless I’m on flat land (not much of that in western NM) the Toyota CC is pretty worthless when towing since it won’t even try to hold speed going up or down hills. I’ve used CC when towing a lot over the years with all different kinds of TV’s and trailers (totally dependent on conditions) and most have done a decent job.

Won't own another TV without adaptive cruise. Saved my rear a few times when I became distracted. It's great to have in construction zones to.

Nothing against you, but this is an issue I have with all this new technology. Lane drift warnings, adaptive CC, automatic braking, etc lulls the driver into a less than focused mindset, and I find that dangerous.

I used to be a test driver and really liked the adaptive cruise. Where I did find where I had to watch it was when I would pull out from behind someone is if there was no one in the lane I pulled into that car would take off.
