    Cruise Control

Was watching a rv how to video. The narrator said never use cruise control when towing. I have always used it when towing on a level road. Have I been doing it wrong all these years? What does the group think about this.

I think that would really depend on the tv. I use cruise all the time when on the interstate with my diesel, but I would of burned up my transmission on my earlier under powered tv doing the same. Cruise will allow the transmission to constantly downshift and rpm's ramp up to catch back up on speed lost, putting a lot of stress on a transmission while towing.
If your tv is powerful enough to maintain speed, then it really doesn't make a difference that I can see.

On a flat road you should be fine. Even in some small hills depending on the TV and the trailer. If the trans isn't shifting a lot you should be fine. When it starts shifting a lot take it out of cruise.

I use it all the time but Texas is pretty flat and the diesel has plenty of torque. The new adaptive cruise works well with a trailer also, it maintains a greater following distance when matching speed with the car in front and brakes sooner if need be.

In July did a 4,400 mile trip through AZ, CO, KS, OK, TX...and of course CA. Used the adaptive cruise for 80% of those miles.......including I70 up & down through the Eisenhower tunnel. I pay attention to trans temp, but the cooling system never allows trans temp to climb into any area of concern....and we've been weighed at a CAT scale at 29,700.

Really can't answer your question without knowing something about your RV and tow vehicle...

I use cruise control a lot while towing to maintain a steady speed. With out cruise I tend to slowly pick up speed to match what traffic is moving.

I use cruise all the time (w/, w/o rv, on my m/c etc), if not I tend to get a lot of go fast awards!

When this question has been asked a number of times on the forum over the years, the vast majority of us use cruise control especially with the newer trucks with towing package(s.) The technologies monitoring engine/tranny/other temperatures, using engine braking (for diesels), tranny shifting when needed, and even applying the brakes are designed for this to make for a more comfortable and even safer driving/towing experience.

What video done when by whom, etc., were you watching ? Please share more about this.
