Dear Ford - Just How Hard Is It To Make A Tailgate?

Driving from Texas heading west to Roswell, NM. The road isn’t the smoothest. Apparently, the road crew in New Mexico lost their level when resurfacing this particular stretch of road. In any event, the infamous Ford tailgate problem struck at the most inopportune time.

We were running about 65mph and the tailgate suddenly dropped. I didn’t realize it, so when I turned into the RV park it carved a nice little gouge into the front hatch of our rig. It also did a number on the top of the tailgate. I guess it’s more difficult to make a tailgate that stays shut than one would think. Utterly amazing. And here I was concerned about our China bombs.

I suppose the moral of the story is to be hyper-aware if you drive a Ford SuperDuty and have a tailgate.

Hmmm..... we received no recall notice.

My husband looked it up (we have a 2016) Its for 2017- 2019. Those trucks with electric tailgate latch releases. The trucks with mechanical tailgate latches are not affected.

Not truck or tailgate related, but blame the roads in that part of New Mexico on heavy equipment for the oil rigs and new pipeline going in. A couple of years ago we took US 285 from Carlsbad to Pecos... I thought we had made a wrong turn and had ended up on the set of a new Mad Max movie. I was embarrassed to tell folks I was a native New Mexican for a while.

Have a recall for electric controlled tailgate on my 2018 F150. Evidently this F150 recall is only in Canada, yet the truck was made in a Us factory. Not sure how that works. Scheduled for September fix.

But so far the tailgate hasn't popped open unintentionally.

Had mine drop on my old 2019 F350. Was pulling out of the RV dealer across a major 4 lane highway and heard a thump while making the left turn onto the highway. Looked in the mirror and saw the gate down, pretty much cardiac arrest lol. I was able to pull over and close it and No damage to truck or trailer even though it dropped while turning! Great idea Larry, I will copy that one.

Tailgate Saver sounds like a good name for that.
Ram went thru same problem with their tailgates dropping.
I find myself checking the rear camera just to see if it's dropped, even after the little recall bumper stop fix.
