    Towing police approval/suggestions

We have a newly purchased TV and TT for our family to enjoy. Before I go any further I’d like to not turn this into a 3/4 ton vs 1/2 debate. I absolutely agree that a 3/4 ton would be better to tow with. But for other reasons we have a 1/2 ton.

The TV is a 2020 Sierra 4x4 crew cab with 6.2 and NHT max trailering package. Sticker payload is 1809

The TT is a 2021 imagine 2800BH. Sticker UVW is 6752 and gvwr of 7995.

WDH is a blue ox. Hooked on 8th link squats the truck 1” in the back and unchanged in the front.

I went to the CAT scale today and here are my findings.

To me, it's not the towing, it is the stopping. Larger trucks have (mostly) larger brakes.

You look very good with your setup.

Your weights are all well within your trucks ratings.

Your trailer has brakes, so your all good there. Adjust them (gain setting) with the manual slider so that you can nearly lock them up with full manual application of the slider. At that point, your truck is not really braking the trailer.

Your brakes on your truck are far more than adequate for your tire size. Tire size/compound dictates the total amount of brake force that can be applied on modern vehicles with properly working brake systems.

You will loose adhesion with the road surface far before the brakes are applied at 100% capability.

Larger trucks typically have larger tires offering larger contact patch (surface area) that equates to more brake force that can be applied to the given road surface before loss of traction/adhesion.

Adjust your brakes on the trailer to maximize the systems effect, drive like a non-moron, and you should be one happy camper!

    Camp on!

Trailer brakes stop trailer. Truck brakes stop truck. Looks like the OP is pretty much good to go to me.

Looks good to me. Front axle is within 100 lbs of unloaded and you are well within your ratings. Enjoy your camping.

Your thread title "Towing police approval/suggestions is really a mute point. IMHO, Unless you were stopped by a trooper or highway police who had a priority on towed units, or were involved in an accident where weight would "possibly" be a contributing factor, the majority of U.S. law enforcement do not have the time, knowledge, equipment and are not remotely interested in pursuing non-commercial weights of RV's and tow vehicles.

That does not mean it never happens, just that it is way way way down on their list.

You missed his tongue in cheek title... He's referring to the towing Police... AKA weight Police.... AKA payload police.... You know, the masses who jump on every truck over who doesn't tow equal to or less than half of the manufactures rated weights....

As a self appointed badge carrying member of the weight police, your numbers are excellent, iMO, as long as you stay under 800# or so in the truck. Great summary and approach.
