    Black holding tank chemicals

We had a Heartland Travel Trailer before we bought our Reflection. We had always used Camco drop in's that were blue in color. They always seemed to be effective and we never had an odor. We switched to Camco Orange Power liquid treatment two trips ago. We didn't have any odor while on our short trip but boy, when we set up this past weekend, different story. We got set up and I went to put another bottle down the toilet and the smell waiting for us was nasty. And I know I drained the black tank properly the trip before. We could smell it throughout our four day trip every time we flushed even with the new bottle of treatment in the tank.

So, I guess my question is twofold....

What is your preferred toilet chemical while 5th Wheel is in use? Should we store the rig with water and chemical in the black tank to avoid this in the future?

We are still newbs at this. Thanks!!

We just use an enzyme in ours.

Also, the odor might not be coming from the toilet. For some unknown reason, GD decided to locate the sewer vent pipe right behind the bathroom vent. If your vent was open and there was a breeze coming from behind the unit, the smell could be coming from the outside. We found this out after I installed a vortex fan in the bathroom vent and ran it backward to draw some air into the trailer. It sucked fumes in from the vent pipe and stunk the place out.

I NEVER store my trailer with empty tank(s). I actually leave a good 1/2 to 2/3 tank of fresh water plus a dose of chemical. I even leave a little water in my gray tanks just to keep the bottom of the tank from drying out. The drying is really where the smell comes from.

After dumping black tank, and flushing until water runs clear through sewer hose, I always put about 2 gallons of water back in with Kronen chemical. Have never had an odor problem with it. Other products we used in the past did decent until the middle of summer, 95 degrees outside, whoa! The smell!!
Have never had an issue with grey tanks, so have never added any chemicals to them.
