Trip to napa valley
Hello fellow GD owners. We are planning to make a stop in Napa, CA on our trip to the Northwest this summer and wondered if there was anyone who may have some ideas for things to do or see in the Napa Valley. Maybe some wineries that stood out for you or maybe some restaurants that you really enjoyed.
All ideas will be appreciated.

How relevant. We're heading that way from Arkansas--Yellowstone, Glacier NP, Crater lake, other oregon sites, redwoods, napa valley, san fran, etc. That is a very general itinerary. So, I'll be watching this thread! We leave late August and don't have a clue as to what's to come. Still working it out.

Sounds like great trips, Patrick & Brent.
We were in the Pacific NW last May and at Glacier NP in July.
Glacier, frankly, was a bit disappointing - but that was a bit influenced by the bad weather we had there. The Canadian Rockies have many more glaciers than Glacier NP.
Pacific NW was the best trip we've had in several years. We took a cruise on the Snake/Columbia Rivers from Lewiston, Idaho to Astoria, OR.
The Columbia River Gorge is a must see - even by road. Breathtaking!
We then added on a 2 week road trip up and down the WA/OR coasts, from the San Juan Islands to
the Dunes in Oregon. Crater Lake was amazing!
Enjoy!Ken & Wilma

Patrick and Julia:
Napa and Sonoma are spectacular areas; we live there. There are two roads in the Napa Valley; they are HWY 29 and the Silverado Trail. There are crossroads that go between then. There are probably 300 wineries in the Napa/Sonoma area and many good restaurants. Calistoga is a great little town at the North end of "the trail". Several good restaurants. The fairgrounds there is a good place to stay. Avoid all California State parks if you have one of these Grand Design units, the parks are way to small. There is a park on HWY 29 good for tent trailers and small trailers.
The Jelly Belly Factory is in Fairfield and has tours.
Vacaville has a park called the Vineyards very good place to stay. There is a KOA is West Sacramento that is also a good place to stay.
After you finish the Napa area take 80 to Sacramento, 16 to Jackson and the to Plymouth. Ther 49 park is a good place to stay, the one in Plymouth. There is a store across the street that caters to RVers. Take Shenandoah Valley road cross from the RV park and you will find lots of wineries. Prices are much better than Napa and no tasting fees.
That should get you started. If you need more info., please let me know. Have a good trip.

Brent and Gina:
When you get to Yellowstone make sure that you go South towards Jackson and see the Grand Tetons. There mountains are spectacular.
Yellowstone is heavily touristy. You will see lots of wild life, watch for traffic to stop and view the wildlife. If you are coming thru Cody stop at the Buffalo Bill Museum. It will take you two days to see it. Very worthwhile. There are RV parks in Cody and there is also a State Park.
Now, on to Crater Lake; this lake is spectacular. I really like the area.
The coast of Oregon is also spectacular. Cross from Eugene to Florence and go South towards Brooking. There is a casino in Florence where you can stay. The RV parks probably will be full. There are jet boat trips in Gold Beach which go up the river, interesting trip. I have done it several times.
The Redwoods in Calif. are worth seeing. They only live along the Calif. Coast.
I just provided information on the Napa Valley.
You will have a great trip. Any questions, please ask.

Wine Train, (make renovations). The “tasting fees” the wineries charge will kill you. Don’t spent too much time in the wine country. One, two days tops. I lived in the area for several years, (no longer), and I always dreaded relatives visiting and requesting to go to San Francisco and the wine country. Traffic is a mess during the summer.

Del Dotto Winery in Napa was our favorite on a trip there a few years ago. The wines are aged in a hand dug cave from the 1800s. Spectacular wine.

If you'd like to take a terrific tour of a wonderful family owned vineyard, I'd recommend Hendry Ranch. It was probably the most detailed and informative tour we had from planting, growing and harvesting the grapes to producing and bottling the wines.

Brent & Gina. We echo the reccomendations for Grand Tetons and Cody, WY. Two of our favorite places from our trip out West in 2011. You've got to eat at Buffalo Bill's Irma Hotel. The buffalo brisket on the buffet - Wow!!
The wildlife in Yellowstone is awesome. Buffalo, elk, mule deer, brown & grizzly bear, moose, fox, .....
Now I'm ready to go back! Have fun.Scott and Jan Platt Ocala, FL

Great stuff all. I say Napa Valley, but we are from Wetumpka Al and this trip will take us to Colorado, Utah, Yosemite, Napa Valley, the Redwood Forest, MT Hood and Rainier, Seattle WA, Vancouver, Glacier NP, Yellowstone, Rushmore, and then gradually head southeast towards home. So, anything you got in addition to the Napa Valley, we will take.
Keep it coming! Thanks!
