    What's the black stuff?

I just replaced the small plastic arm that holds the bedroom door open on my 2500RL. When removing the bracket to get the old arm out there was the black tarry stuff around the edge that I think is some sort of sealant. What is that and do I need to replace it since half of it came off with the bracket.

I've attached a link to apicture. You can see the black stuff on the bottom of the bracket but most of what was on top came off.

I'm guessing it's lap sealant but I'm new to all this and want to be certain I get the right stuff if I need to reseal it.

You just need some butyl tape behind it for weatherproofing. It comes in various colors. I haven't personally seen black used in the RV industry before, but it is made. It also helps give a little bond since the screws are rarely into a solid anchor.

Is that the same as flex-seal or flex-tape?

No, it's not. You can buy rolls of butyl from Amazon, and a local camper dealer might give you enough even. If you have some RTV silicone, it'll do. Just get the holes well sealed.
