There's also the balance between truck and trailer.
My set up is almost 50/50. A F150 is close to half what my trailer weighs. When the winds and semis blow I hardly feel it!

Payload is a large factor plus there is not an F150 that can tow what my F350 DRW can tow and carry. The towing experience and piece of mind are worth their weight in gold.

There are a few things that directly affect that marketing tow rating....

    1. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
    2. Payload
    3. Axle Weight Rating
    4. Tire Weight Loading
    5. Pin/Hitch Weight

Once ALL of these variables are properly accounted for, then you see how much of that Tow Rating is left..

150/1500 is no comparison to any 3/4 or 1 ton truck.

    Good Luck

I have one of each, a 2019 f150 with max tow and a 2017 f350. The 350 weighs about 1900 more than the 150 and Payload (as mentioned) is 4263lbs vs 1552lbs respectively. Huge difference between the two. The only thing I tow with the 150 is our boat (5500lbs) and while it tows it ok, it's not the same experience at all.

Ford ran an advertising campaign 30 years ago that said a F150 "works like a truck, rides like a car."

I have a 2020 F150 SuperCrew 2x4 with the 2.7 Ecoboost motor. When I put my 24' Bennington tritoon behind it (4500 lbs. total), it pulled it very well. I just didn't care for the springing on the rear end and especially the shock absorbers.

My F150 "works like a car and rides like a car." It's sprung like an old Crown Victoria--for smooth ride.

But I still have my F250 diesel that I use for working, hauling and towing higher loads, and it's good up to 13K lbs. towing.

But that tiny 2.7 Ecoboost engine when in Sport Mode is incredibly fast. 0-60 times are 6 seconds, and it'll run the mid 14's in the quarter mile. That's 1970 supercar territory. There are 3.5 Ecoboost street trucks with Superchargers running the quarter mile in 10.5 seconds.

1st TT, SOB bought 2009 "1/2 Ton Towable". Yeah, but! Towed with a 2007 Nissan Titan for 3 years. I well remember going to the Texas coast in high winds and struggled to get to 55mph. IIRC 5 mpg. Plus it was pushing me, not me pulling it. Had some scary times too. Fast Forward, bought my first Ram dually 2012. Not even in the same ballpark. Now I have a 2018 Ram and a 337 Reflection and the feelings of safety are there every time I tow. I believe the 1/2 Ton Towable is simply a marking ploy. Legal yes. Safe YMMV. Regards

The advertised tow rating is garbage, marketing for low information consumers.

Vehicle ccc and rear axle rating are the two things to look at when asking the question "can I tow this".

You'll find the f150 lacking for anything midsized and larger and impossible for most all but the lightest fifth wheels.

I'd love to see my fifth wheel attached to a 150 and watch it try and stop it.

It all boils down to that right there, forget all about the ratings, specs, etc. 2 vehicles that are, at least roughly, the same size both running gas engines and one is 1900lbs heavier. I would guess on a percentage basis the 350 is around 40% heavier. Heavier frames, suspension, steering, brakes, wheels, tires, etc. all the important stuff to control a load and the more mass your hauling the more mass you need to do the hauling to minimize the tail wagging the dog so to speak.

I found this very interesting assuming its accurate. Look at the weight gain over the years on HD trucks:

GM’s owners manual goes into great detail providing tow capabilities using tow vehicles option based on SAE standard J2807, Performance Requirements for Determining Tow-Vehicle Gross Combination Weight Rating and Trailer Weight Rating.

I’m not familiar with Ford’s tow ratings but would assume, they also use J2807. If they don’t they are assuming great liability.

Here is the problem with the SAE J2807 uses a 15% 5th wheel pin weight to get those really high towing ratings. Most 5er are around 22 percent which for a 10,000 5er the big difference between 1500 at 15% or 2200. at 22%.

States that exceeding the GVWR is a reason to fail
Here is what it says in the J2807 and link to the infomation.

5.4 GVWR/Rear GAWR and Tongue Weight/Kingpin Weight Considerations

The tow vehicle shall be able to accommodate appropriate trailer tongue and/or kingpin weight to attain a particular TWR without exceeding Rear GAWR and/or GVWR. Required minimum conventional trailer tongue weight shall be 10% of TWR and required minimum fifth wheel or gooseneck trailer kingpin weight shall be 15% of TWR.

    TWR = Trailer Weight Rating
