Bed cover for 5th wheel tow vehicle

I’m purchasing my first 5th wheel, and I’m thinking of getting a bed cover for those times that we’re not towing, but still have the 5th wheel hitch in the truck bed and want to protect the hitch and any gear stored behind it once we unhitch at the campsite.

The truck is a Silverado 3500SRW with an 8’ bed.

Any recommendations on a bed cover that’s hitch friendly?

    Thanks

ID:	30259 I've had this Retrax on my last two long beds and love it. Very durable and about 99% leak free as well. As you can see it also clears a B&W hitch plus you can slide it partially closed while towing to keep things dry etc.

BTW, how does the box that the cover rolls into affect storage space at the front of the bed?

We have a bakflip tonneau cover on our truck. https://bakindustries.com/?gclid=Cjw...RoCK-AQAvD_BwE

It closes over the 5th wheel hitch when fully closed and when folded open covers the last quarter of the box behind the cab but still allows the trailer to hitch at the same time. I can remove it with two wing nuts. I can remove and install it by myself and all that remains is a couple of narrow rails on each side of the box.

I would buy another one if I replaced the truck. Our truck is a chev srw long box 8ft for comparison.

I have the Bakflip on my LB as well. There are a couple downsides; on a long bed, it gets pretty heavy as you fold it towards the cab and once folded back it sits high enough to obscure the over the shoulder view of the hitch. I have the camera in the third brake light so it isn't a big deal. I previously had a retractable cover and the box that houses it takes up a fair amount of the bed height so you lose some storage along the front edge of the bed. I like both but there are compromises whichever you choose.

You don't lose much space at all. The cannister hangs down to about 12-15 inches above the bed floor and out about 8-9 inches from the front bed wall if that makes sense. You can still slide bundles of firewood under it for example. I've had
Bakflips on previous trucks and they're a bear to fold up on a dually from the ground. This one slides back with 2 fingers from the ground. It's not cheap but built like a tank.

Retrax or Roll-n-Lock. I've had 2 Roll-n-Locks and like them.

Either takes up minimal space and are easy to use. The Roll-n-Lock leave enough space at the front of my short bed for the hitch to work and also enough room underneath for my aux fuel tank.

On my RAM, I'm running a soft cover. Truxedo Duece 2. Very high quality, smart frame, and the vinyl has an excellent warranty! My TV tows other trailers, and with one of them a hard would never clear. If you want the best hard cover out there, see if LoMax has one for your long bed. I run a LoMax on my daily driver as there was no way I'd ever buy another BAKflip or the Truck Hero clones after the lousy way it held up on my last half-ton. LoMax is made by a company that totally stands behind their product.

We too have the Truxedo Duece, in fact it is the second one now. We like how you can flip open the cover next to the cab for easy access up there without having to roll the whole cover back.
