    Dexter Axle Popping Noise

My husband thinks I’m just paranoid, however being the one guiding our 2019 Reflection 303RLS into RV and campsites, I noticed popping and clanking noise coming from the Dexter Axle. The noise isn’t a steady chatter, it’s a clanky metal sound that’s more pronounced when backing up. I took my RV to the dealer repair shop for warranty work and annual PM. The service rep said they didn’t notice anything wrong but they also didn’t fix all the warranty items either. I’m not knocking the repair shop, I’m just concern with this disturbing noise. So I wanted to ask if Dexter Axles are inherently noisy?

Trailer suspensions are generally pretty noisy. Leaf springs grinding and slipping as geometry changes when turning or moving on hill and shackles and spring mounts with bushings that aren’t the highest quality joints.

Actually, it sounds quieter than mine (we have the same model/year trailer). I think you are hearing suspension noise, not axle noise. The spring and other suspension parts tend to slip around a bit when the unit is turning, even slightly. I think that is the noise that you are hearing. Mine even gives a fairly loud “pop” from time-to-time when turning. The harder the turn, the more noise. I try to keep turns to as loose as possible, even taking a couple of pull-ups, as your husband did. I don’t have any choice, other than making a tight turn, when coming off the street and into my driveway. That’s when I hear the most noise.

My Dexter axles are fairly quiet. Have you greased the wet bolts? There are greasable screws with grease fitting at each joint in the suspension with most of the GD trailers. If you have not greased these they need to be greased every 3000 miles. I can usually tell when it is time to grease mine as it starts to creak. After greasing mine is quiet.

See my response to your other post on the same topic to grease the wet bolt grease nipples every 3000 miles and it should quiet down.

Dexter axles are quiet as a church mouse. The leaf springs and bushings on the other hand......

Thank you all for your input and I will check the wet bolts and grease. I found the Dexter Axle Operation Maintenance Service Manual in my quest to find someone else with my concern, so I have the instructions on greasing. You’ve made my husband happy as I will now pay attention when I have aft end guide duty and not be distracted with chasing down the noises I hear
