Good thread, I've been thinking about this and plotting the future. All trips so far have been 4 hours or less. I need gas after 3 hours or 200 plus mile. Refilling twice seems about right. There may be a day to push further but that would depend on how long you stay at that next spot.

Depends on how far our destination is, and where we have reservations. When going out west and planning to stop rest area/truck stop, we went until 8 or 9 pm. The external fuel tank allows us to go almost all day without filling up. When we stopped at CG, we filled up either before arriving or shortly after set up, for next day departure.

Hi, I am newer to RV'ing as well, just bought our first trailer this year in June. We jumped in with both feet, hit the road this summer and just returned to our 'sticks and bricks' two weeks ago. We worked our regular jobs while we traveled and we each work a lot, a typical work week for us is a bit over 60 hours a week. What did we find about driving? We found for the most part that we like to travel 2 - 3 hours between destinations in the middle of the week, when we're moving. There are times though that you need to get somewhere! So, on weekends, we would pick one day and 'hit it', driving about 6 hours to ensure we were moving! Anything over 6 hours is a slog and takes the enjoyment out of the day. We can do it, but would prefer not to.

Your exact dilemma is one we're facing when we head out again in February. We know we need to hightail it to warmer weather and we're heading west and south as well. Our plan? We're intending to drive 10 hours on day one and then another 4 - 5 hours the next day. I know once we reach our initial stop after that craziness, we'll want to stop for about two weeks. That 10 hour day is going to be a killer.

To summarize, we like to travel 2-3 hours between stops. Going slow is the point of RV travel for us! There are times however that we need to have long travel days to switch geography's and get to our next target area. Everyone is different in their style of travel, but the wisdom of limiting to 6 hours or so of towing is correct. I did find towing is not the same, at all, as car travel. It's very active, so the 6 hours is VERY smart. When we do the 10 hour slog, we will switch drivers.

It's a bit like being a pilot, driving is active with a trailer - the mind needs a break and it's dangerous to go too long without stopping. With car travel it's body fatigue more than anything that tells you how long is too long. When towing, there is a mental fatigue that is more than car travel - so keep it in mind when planning how far you will travel in a day. It's very hard to articulate this facet of towing - but immediately upon towing your RV, you'll recognize what I'm clumsily trying to say here.

    Have fun!

All - A good thread. Travel friends and us are planning on an 1100 mile trip one way and return a week later this summer. Them with a TT and gasoline, us with a 5vr and diesel.. How far to go in a day has been on our minds. He gets about 200 miles between refills, us a little longer. So it looks like about two fill-ups is far enough. Sooo, how do you know where to camp? You cant just drive around and look for sites. Do you typically setup camp or “walmart” it when you will be covering ground again?

    Thanks,

    Thanks,
I use RV Trip Wizard to find campgrounds and make reservations. We've not had to "wing" it, and just find a spot. Even for one night stops, reservations are important to us. We want to know we have a place waiting for us at the end of the travel day.

    Thanks,
During our planning stage we map out our route and get an idea of how far we'd like to make it each day. On our last trip, we mixed it up and made reservations for every other night. Worked out ok. Needless to say, we'd prefer the quiet of an RV park to a truck stop and/or rest area truck parking. We have not yet used a 'Walmart'.
