    Towing 20K, do I need a 25K rated hitch?

    I really want a Solitude 374th which has a GVWR of 20K pounds. Can I get away with a 20K rated hitch or is it too chancy? The price jump to a 25K pound hitch is substantial. Driving a F350 diesel with full tow package.

    I'll offer my thoughts about your question, and also an opinion about your setup. 1. Personally, I had the same decision to make when I bought my Momentum 394M (20,000 lb GVWR) and to me, it wasn't even close. I went with a 25K version of the B&W Companion hitch. If I recall correctly, the 20K version of that hitch did not have enough pin weight capacity for a trailer that could possibly put down 4400-4500 lbs of pin weight....PLUS....why be on the ragged edge of ANY capacity rating when towing. 2nd point/thought. Towing a 20,000 lb GVWR trailer is NOT the thing to do with a SRW truck. I realize that the 2020 trucks have a higher payload capacity that the previous model years, but when you add up the pin weight of a fully loaded trailer, the weight of the hitch, and anything and everything that goes in/on the truck such as passengers, possibly extra fuel, toolbox with tools, etc, etc., you are very likely going to be overloaded on the payload number of the truck. And of course if you are overloaded on the payload number, you are automatically over the GVWR of the truck. Hopefully this offers some insight for the question you asked, and some advice for future reference.

    I wouldn't cut corners on the towing equipment. If it were me I would go with the 25K hitch.

    I also agree that a 20K 5er is too much for a SRW - even a 3500.

    When I purchased my Momentum, I really wanted the B & W Companion, but at the time they only made a 20k for the Ford puck system. I even spoke to a B & W rep at an RV show, and she said I shouldn't get it. I ended up purchasing a 24k rated hitch, and of course now the Companion comes in a 25k version. I'd go with the larger capacity to be safe.

    I'll have to support what the others are saying - a 20K GVWR fifth wheel is WAY too much for a SRW truck. You could be putting the safety of your family and others at risk.

    ^^^^^ Rob beat me to it. A 20k GVWR 5th wheel will put you WAY OVER PAYLOAD for your 1 ton SRW truck. Factory listed pin weight is significantly understated.

    I tow a 13,995 lb GVWR Reflection 337RLS with a 2020 F350 diesel CCSB AND use a 35 lb lightweight Andersen 5th wheel hitch. My truck’s payload is 3484 lbs and we use almost every lb of it.

    My actual pin weight is between 2800-2900 lbs, Bakflip bed cover 55 lbs, lightweight Andersen hitch is 35 lbs, wife and I weigh a combined 400 lbs, dog is 25 lbs, misc stuff in the truck is 50 lbs.

    So;
    2900
    +55
    +35
    +400
    +25
    +50

    3465 lbs
