Practiced this now for 20+ years and it works like a charm! (Never have had a larger than 6-gallon water heater)

Just curious how do you run out tank on electric and propane at the same time?

Yes, it's essential to use both propane and electric on ours. On electric only, we don't have nearly enough hot water. It runs out within about 10 minutes max.

There are two separate switches, one for electric and one for propane on the control panel. Turn them both on.

This is part of our control panel; Upper two switches control the water heater.

You don't indicate which model GD you have, so hard to tell. If yours looks like CoChris's picture, do as he says. On my 381, I control it using the touchpad. There is an icon in the "Monitor" section for both gas and electric. I just turn them both on. Just a heads up, there is usually a small switch on the water heater itself for electric. Make sure this is on, then you can control it from inside the RV.

We have a 12 gallon and have had plenty of hot water for the two of us.

Yes, my wife and I have had 6 gallons on last 2 RVs going back 5 years. Never a problem. Like others say, we are not taking long showers. And we have never paid attention to who uses hot water when....IE, we don't try to time anything other than short showers to conserve on holding tank space.

My husband and I and our 6 gallon hot water tank have always been great. We have never had an issue with hot water, even when we both took showers, I washed my hair and did the morning dishes. The hot water is so hot that we actually use very little of the 6 gallons for a shower or washing dishes. Also, the recovery time for the gas mode is quite fast. You should be more than fine with 12 gallons.

Hello. There are 2 of us and we had no problem with the 6 gallon hot water heaters in our Imagine 2600 and our Refection 337. The 12 gallon hot water heater in our Solitude seems like more hot water than we could ever use.
