    Death Valley Campgrounds

Poppy—thanks for the feedback on Death Valley National Park Furnace CG as being the top selection to stay for most folks. We went through DV a few years back in June on our way to Fairfax CA just across the Golden Gate. Next stop was Yosemite and the Tioga road going into Yosemite from the eastside had just opened. See attached pic…..had to stop and make a call “old school.”

We were driving from Vegas to Tahoe one year, and ran up on a "town" that said on the sign "Gateway to Death Valley."

Looked like a bunch of people were living in RV's, and they had gold fever. Didn't look like anywhere I'd want to be staying at.

At that time, we only saw 1 franchise restaurant in 400 miles of driving. Pretty desolate place.

We were driving from Vegas to Frisco for a family wedding. You are right on the drive from Vegas going west or northwest seemed (hell was) pretty desolate and not much for MANY MANY MANY MANY miles..........just glad we had a brand new rental car !

Somewhere about 200 miles north of Las Vegas, my 5 year old daughter woke up in the back seat, stuck her head up and asked "Are we in the middle of nowhere."

Yes, Elizabeth. We're in the middle of nowhere.

Only thing interesting we saw was a pair of fighter planes flying down the highway at 100' off the ground. One plane was inverted and we were looking into the face of the pilot--coming right at us at 400 knots.

We usually stay at Stovepipe Wells. There are a dozen sites with water and electric behind the store. While a little off center, about the only game in the valley with hookups at that time. The private park in Furnace Creek was pretty junky at that time and crowded . I understand that the FC NPS campground now has electric sites. We also had a "close encounter" with jets on one of the DV back roads. What a hoot.

We stayed in Death Valley in December of 2013. This was with our previous 5th wheel.
We stayed at Furnace Creek Campground two nights. It has full hookups, and the sites were pretty open, i.e. not a lot of trees. Some sites had some trees, but most were out in the open.

Stovepipe Wells Campground in a graded dirt parking lot. There are no trees or wind breaks here. There are some spots behind the store as gildsp8 said above.

    Thank You Curtis!
I started getting serious with photography a few years ago. I am learning all the time. I hope to get some good shots of the Momentum every time we go out....
