    I-10 Winds in Winter

    Hi all,
Just wanted to briefly ask about experiences East-bound on I-10 (from Tucson to San Antonio). We're fixing to take that drive on Jan 9th and notice the frequent high-wind warnings and dust storms down that interstate. Apologies in advance for dumb questions, new to RVing .

There are windy days, sometimes many in a row and not so windy days. Watch the forecast and plan accordingly. Never had much of an issue going through texas. I've had to stop in SD / MT for a couple of days though.

It's the springtime when the winds get really bad. Winter can bring a stray snow storm.

We drive I-10 through west Texas and NM quite often (native New Mexican with family still in Las Cruces). We also drive west from Cruces to get to California. West of Cruces, the wind effect on a heavy fifth wheel isn't the biggest issue - it's the reduced visibility from blowing sand. We've been stopped when the interstate was closed... had to wait for several hours and were then escorted (slowly) in groups by state troopers with their lights flashing. In west Texas, I've watched large class As having difficulty trying to maintain their lane in high crosswinds while all I had to do is keep a little extra pressure on the steering wheel every now and then in gusts to maintain a straight line. We just make sure the fresh water tank is full (extra ballast down low) and slow down a bit. Have never had a problem doing it that way. We've encountered steady winds in the 40+ MPH range with gusts into the 60s in these locations. The hazards are increased if it's a cross-wind. Head winds will suck fuel and tail winds make my wallet happy.

BTW - the only "dumb" question is the one you don't ask.

We've had real bad winds between Phoenix and Quartzsite too. Not fun.

Winds happen, that's one reason I have a dually. 5th wheels tow pretty good in high winds. You know you have a good crosswind going when the tractor trailer in front of you is leaning sideways. As mentioned above the tires on the leeward side are going to be slightly stressed, your tire pressure monitor system (TPMS) will let you know. You will need to be prepared for when a tractor trailer (or other large vehicle) passes you. The change in wind pressure will cause a little swerve, nothing major, but unnerving if you are not prepared for it.

Being retired and nomadic by nature we always plan to be within 100 miles of a scheduled obligation a day or two before hand. That way when we encounter severe weather it's no big stresser to hold up for a day and let the storm pass, most do within 24 hours. Also the air usually more stable in the morning and doesn't get rowdy until the afternoon.

The biggest thing to remember in high wind is to slow down.

Thank you all for your thoughts and responses. I found it a bit ironic that within a week after posting this question I turned on the weather channel to see the snow/iced roads in Van Horn (far west Texas). State patrol shut down I-10 and motorists slept in their cars on the road. Local sheriff said he had not seen that in his 20 years of being sheriff there. I suppose one never knows when wild weather will strike.
