You have to remove it every time you winterize anyway which is every year for most of us. Yearly inspections will provide a rough baseline of remaining life. Personally I have gone 4 years on one but there was nothing left but the steel rod! Wouldn’t recommend that.
PS- your residential gas water heater also has an anode rod, does everybody check that (along with the dip tube) on a regular basis?
