I agree at one year the anode rod pictured is still in pretty good shape and could go longer before replacement. While at one year ours typically is about the same, I typically replace at one year because if I go through the process of removing the anode rod for inspection and considering a replacement is inexpensive, why not just replace it with a new one?

You have to remove it every time you winterize anyway which is every year for most of us. Yearly inspections will provide a rough baseline of remaining life. Personally I have gone 4 years on one but there was nothing left but the steel rod! Wouldn’t recommend that.


PS- your residential gas water heater also has an anode rod, does everybody check that (along with the dip tube) on a regular basis?
