    Heater

Why, when the heater is running, does so much heat escape out the heater exhaust outside? Is this normal?

Pretty normal - it's the combustion air from the gas flame. Definitely not a high efficiency furnace like in one's home!

Not only is it normal, it's necessary. If the combustion gasses were vented internally, we would be dead. Home furnaces are designed the same way - you just don't get on top of the house to feel the exhaust vent.

Well, not really. It's necessary, absolutely, but the efficiencies are so good on some home gas furnaces now that you can use PVC to vent them.
