No need to do the breaker shuffle.

Turn power pole breaker off, plug in EMS and camper

    Turn power pole breaker on

The delay in the EMS tests power and if all is good, it will allow power to the camper, if all is not good, it will prevent power from going to the camper.

Hum, I don't turn off the breaker. It makes no difference. I plug in the EMS and while its doing its test I lock it to the pole. By then I check if all is good. If it is, then I plug in the tt.

On my first camper using an EMS I would leave the pole breaker on as well while plugging in, but noticed at times there was arcing from the outlet. Turning the breaker off eliminated those scenarios.

I flip the breaker on, first thing, and before I hook up the EMS. I check the box and anything metallic that is nearby, with a non-contact voltage tester. If anything is hot that shouldn’t be, I can move to another site with ease, as I haven’t unhooked or unloaded anything.

If the box checks out okay, I ensure that the breaker is off, then hook up the EMS and power cable to the trailer. Then I turn on the breaker at the box. No problem with burnt/arced prongs on my expensive EMS that way.

Or do I get a 50 amp protector and then a 50-30 amp connector? Sorry for such a naïve question
Thanks for posting the question! You probably saved me some money on the question I forgot to ask. Stay safe- See ya out there!

I have a Progressive hard wired EMS system. It was installed before our first trip. On our very first trip I plugged into the 30 AMP outlet and the EMS blocked the power. Error code was reversed polarity. I used an adapter and plugged into the 50 AMP outlet which worked fine. A little research on the web said reversed polarity could cause a variety of problems including fire.

This was in a relatively new seemingly well maintained RV park.

    That makes me wonder...

If you use a 50amp to 30amp adapter then you can't use the 30amp ems correct?

that one's outside my expertise; will check w/ my electrician friends.
my understanding is that the adaptor st3eps down the amperage so the EMS is receiving only 30 amp; how else could it work. so a 50-30 adaptor and 30 amp EMS/surge protector should be just fine. the 50 amp surge protector will protect anything from over 50 amps, which will blow out a 30 amp TT.
any experts out there to help us out?

Use whichever EMS matches the camper. 50A camper, 50A EMS. 30A camper, 30A EMS. The adapters will provide what is needed to the camper without affecting EMS.
