I can confirm Papermaker and Robledjl comments!
2020 Chevy 2500HD 6.6L Gas here pulls my 297RSTS with ease and normal struggle up 7% mountain incline.
->I found this gas 3/4 truck in a random Michigan lot earlier this year and negotiated very well for my trade in lease
-> I went with 297RSTS TT because it was much much lower cost than 5th wheel plans at the dealer (also because less weight for Gas is ideal)
Really depends on your budget - I would also confirm/summarize comments:
- 5th wheel makes for better handling (with gas or diesel engine) and convinience of unhooking and more cargo storage (are you fulltime or part time camping -> extra $15-25k?
- diesel engine and one-ton pickup for additional payload capacity, more power over mountain terrain and general driving -> extra $10k-15k? (due to high demand and limited availability)
Honorable points to mention:
- My next will most likely be Ford F250 with the towing package
- GM is also planning to sell trucks with Super Cruise (advanced cruise control) with Towing in highways next yearAlex M

For what it is worth - My tow vehicle is a F250 diesel towing the 315RLTS and have no problems traveling from Utah to Oregon/Washington. I average 10mpg towing and 16mpg without the trailer.

If the decision is really gas vs diesel, maybe it matters.
However, at least for Chevy/GM, the only real difference from 2500 to 3500 is the addition of one more rear spring in the 3500, thereby giving higher payload.
The price difference is about $1000, so, for me, I never understand why anyone wouldn't go ahead and get the 3500 - as they say, you can't have too much truck. You could of course beef up the 2500 springs, but the legal capacity is still what's on the sticker.Colin & Tracy
